Studying Spanish vocabulary with online flashcards

Vocabulary is the first thing most learners lose, which is why Spanish online flashcards help so much when they come from your own course material instead of a generic word list.

  • Make one card per word, phrase or verb form so each review tests a single thing.
  • Add the article for nouns (la biblioteca, el mercado) so gender is learned with the word.
  • Include a short example sentence on the back to practice real use.
  • Review a little every day rather than cramming a long list the night before a test.
Example beginner Spanish flashcards
¿Cómo estás?How are you? Use it with one person you know well, or ¿Cómo está? with someone you address formally.
la bibliotecaLibrary. It is feminine, so the article la goes with it.
Ayer fui al mercado.Yesterday I went to the market. Fui is the preterite of ir, and it is the same form as ser.
tener que + infinitiveTo have to do something, as in Tengo que estudiar: I have to study.
¿Dónde está el baño?Where is the bathroom? Dónde means where and está is the form of estar used for location.

Flashcards from your own material

Upload the chapter PDF, class slides or a photo of your vocab sheet, and get flashcards built from the words you are actually studying.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know come back later, so review time goes to the Spanish that is not sticking yet.

Study anywhere in the browser

Review on a laptop or phone without installing anything. The free plan includes browser study, and Plus adds export to Anki and CSV.

How it works

Add your Spanish material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or image of your notes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl turns the material into flashcards with the Spanish term or phrase on the front and the meaning on the back.

Review online every day

Study in the browser and let spaced repetition schedule the cards you find hardest for the next session.

Good cards are short. Put one word, phrase or verb form on each card, and include a gender marker or example sentence on the back so you practice using the word, not just recognizing it.

Spaced repetition does the scheduling. Each review tells the tool whether you knew a card, so the words you keep missing appear more often until they move into long-term memory.

Frequently asked questions

How many new Spanish words should I add to flashcards each day?

Many learners do well with 10 to 20 new words a day. Spaced repetition then brings back the ones you miss, so the daily load stays manageable.

Should I learn Spanish verbs or vocabulary first?

High-frequency verbs such as ser, estar, tener and ir pay off early, and nouns and phrases you hear in class are useful too. Pair each word with a short sentence so it is easier to use later.

Can I export my Spanish flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included on the Plus plan, which costs $39 a year or $7.99 a month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan, which includes 3 generations per month and browser study, without adding a credit card.
