Why custom letter picture cards work better

Printed letter flashcards with pictures are easy to find, but they rarely match the words in your child's books or the sounds your class is covering this week. Starting from your own alphabet material keeps the pictures and letters familiar.

  • Use photos of your own alphabet book so pictures match what the learner already sees.
  • Keep each session to about ten minutes and focus on five to eight letters.
  • Review letters with confusing shapes, such as b and d, in the same session.
  • Add a few new letters each week and let spaced repetition bring back older ones.
Example letter picture flashcards
Which picture word starts with A?Apple, a red fruit that starts with the letter A
Which picture word starts with B?Ball, a round toy that starts with the letter B
Which picture word starts with C?Cat, a small furry pet that starts with the letter C
Which picture word starts with D?Dog, a common pet that starts with the letter D
Which picture word starts with E?Elephant, a large animal with a trunk that starts with the letter E

Built from your pages

Photos of alphabet charts and worksheets are read with text recognition, so each card uses the letters and picture words from your own material.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and familiar ones fade to less frequent review, so letters stick without drilling the same ones every day.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study on any device with a browser. Export to PDF or print is included in Plus.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a photo of an alphabet page, a PDF worksheet or typed notes listing letters and picture words.

Generate picture cards

DeckOwl creates flashcards pairing each letter with its picture word, such as B with ball.

Study and review

Practice in the browser and let spaced repetition schedule the letters that need more time.

Each card pairs one letter with a clear picture of a word that starts with it, such as a cat for C. Learners say the letter and the word aloud, which connects letter shape, sound and meaning. Repetition over several short sessions does more than one long sheet.

If you want to print cards, the Plus plan adds PDF export, so you can make a custom set and print it at home.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters should a picture flashcard set cover?

Most early learners do well with a set of five to eight letters that share a sound or shape, then add more once those are steady. Smaller sets make it easier to notice errors and fix them quickly.

How do I teach letter sounds with picture flashcards?

Show the picture, ask the learner to say the picture word, then have them say only the first sound and then the letter. Repeat the pattern across sessions so the letter, sound and picture stay linked.

Can I print the flashcards?

Printing and PDF export are part of the Plus plan, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study the cards in your browser.

Is there a free plan to try it?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and you do not need a credit card to start.
