Why custom letter cards can beat a generic printable

Many parents and teachers search for letter recognition flashcards when a child is starting the alphabet, and printable sets are easy to find. A generic sheet, though, rarely matches the letters, fonts or example words your child is actually learning this week.

  • Pull uppercase and lowercase pairs from the same source
  • Flag look-alike letters for side-by-side review
  • Use example words with each letter for sound practice
  • Study in the browser first, then export when you need a printout
Example letter sound and shape flashcards
Which letter makes the /m/ sound at the start of 'moon'?M. Letter sounds link a symbol to the first sound of a word a child already knows.
How do you tell lowercase b and d apart? The bowl of lowercase b is on the right of the stem, and the bowl of d is on the left.
What letter do you get when you flip lowercase p left to right?Lowercase q. Both have a bowl and a stem, but the stem of q sits on the right.
Which uppercase letter has three horizontal bars on one vertical stem?E. The letter F has only two horizontal bars, which is a common mix-up.

Works from what you already have

Upload a PDF, slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a letter chart, and the text is read for you.

Cards that focus on confusing letters

Pair look-alikes like b and d, or p and q, so the cards drill the differences that trip learners up.

Spaced repetition built in

Letters you miss come back more often, and the ones you know fade into longer intervals.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a file or snap a picture of the page you are working from.

Generate the flashcards

DeckOwl turns the letters, sounds and example words into front and back cards.

Study in short sessions

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export to PDF or Anki on Plus.

Making your own set from the material you already use keeps the cards aligned with your lesson. Upload the phonics chart, worksheet or photo of a page, and the cards pull out the letters and their matching sounds or words for you to review.

Spacing matters for early letters too. Cards you miss come back sooner, so the trickiest shapes get extra practice without you sorting the stack by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters should a letter recognition session cover?

Keep it to a small group, such as three to five letters, so each one gets a fair number of reviews. Add new letters once the earlier ones are coming back correctly.

How do I teach letters that look alike, like b and d?

Put the two letters in separate cards and point out the difference, such as the bowl of b sitting on the right of the stem. Mixing them only after each one is solid usually helps more than drilling them together from the start.

Can I print my letter flashcards?

Printing and PDF export are paid features on the Plus plan, which is $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan with three generations per month and no credit card, then upgrade later if you want exports or unlimited generations.
