Why build your own prefix cards

A printed list of medical prefixes is a fine starting point, but the prefixes your instructor tests are the ones in your own lecture slides and textbook chapters. DeckOwl builds medical prefixes flashcards from that material, so each card matches the wording you actually need to know.

  • Cards pull prefixes from your own course material, not a generic list
  • Each card can show the prefix, its meaning, and a real term that uses it
  • Spaced repetition brings back the prefixes you miss most often
  • Start free with 3 generations per month and study in the browser
Example medical prefix flashcards
Prefix: hyper-Above, excessive, or increased. Example: hypertension means high blood pressure.
Prefix: hypo-Below, under, or deficient. Example: hypoglycemia means low blood sugar.
Prefix: tachy-Fast. Example: tachycardia means a fast heart rate, usually above 100 beats per minute at rest.
Prefix: brady-Slow. Example: bradycardia means a slow heart rate, usually below 60 beats per minute at rest.
Prefix: dys-Painful, difficult, or abnormal. Example: dyspnea means difficult or labored breathing.

Built from your material

Cards come from the prefixes in your own course files, so the wording matches what your instructor teaches.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know fade into longer intervals, so the prefixes stick.

Photos work too

Snap a page from a printed handout or textbook and the text is read so you can make cards from it.

How it works

Add your source

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of the page with the prefixes.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl creates flashcards with the prefix on one side and its meaning and example term on the other.

Review on a schedule

Study in the browser with spaced repetition, and add or edit cards as your course moves on.

Prefixes are easiest to learn in context. A card that shows hyper- next to hypertension, and then hypo- next to hypoglycemia, makes the pattern visible in a way a long alphabetical list does not.

Frequently asked questions

How many prefix flashcards should I make for a medical terminology unit?

Start with the prefixes listed in your syllabus or the first chapter, which is often 20 to 40 terms. Add more as the unit goes on so each new set builds on the ones you already know.

Should I learn prefixes, suffixes, and roots on separate cards?

Mix them in the same deck once you know the basics, because medical terms combine all three. A card like tachycardia, built from tachy- and -cardia, shows how the parts fit together.

Can I export my prefix flashcards to Anki or a CSV file?

Exports to Anki, CSV, PDF, and DOCX are part of the Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The Free plan lets you study the cards in the browser without exporting.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the Free plan without a credit card, and students get 40% off paid plans with a school email.
