Turn your phonics lessons into monster phonics flashcards

Printed monster phonics sheets only cover the sounds someone else chose. DeckOwl builds flashcards from the phonics material your child is actually learning, with spaced repetition to help the sounds stick.

Why generate your own phonics flashcards

Printed monster phonics sheets are handy, but they rarely match the sounds your child is working on this week. A set of monster phonics flashcards made from the actual lesson keeps practice on target, from single letter sounds through digraphs like sh and ch.

  • Upload the phonics page your teacher sent home instead of hunting for a matching printable.
  • Keep sound cards and tricky-word cards in one deck so review is in one place.
  • Use the front of each card for a sound or word and the back for the answer, then flip to check.
  • Export to Anki, PDF or CSV on the Plus plan if you want printed or portable copies.
Example phonics flashcards for early readers
What is a digraph? Two letters that make one sound, such as sh, ch, th or ck.
What sound does the digraph sh make?/sh/, as in ship and fish. The two letters are read as a single sound.
What is a split digraph? Two vowel letters separated by a consonant and a silent e, such as a_e in cake, giving the long vowel sound.
Which sound do the letter pairs ai and ay usually make? The long a sound /ā/, as in rain and play. Both spellings are common at the end and middle of words.
What is a tricky word in phonics?A word with spellings that cannot be fully sounded out, such as said or the, so it is learned by sight.

Built from your material

Upload PDFs, slides, notes or photos of worksheets and get flashcards drawn from them.

Spaced repetition

Cards your child misses come back sooner, so letter sounds and tricky words are reviewed when they are due.

Quizzes and mind maps

Check sound recognition with multiple choice and true or false questions, then map how sounds group together.

How it works

Upload your sheets

Add a PDF, slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a phonics page.

Review the cards

Go through the generated flashcards and remove any that do not match your scheme.

Practice on schedule

Study in the browser each day and let spaced repetition bring back the sounds that need work.

Early readers need short, frequent practice. Five to eight new cards per session, plus a few earlier ones, is usually enough to build recall without overwhelming a beginner. Because DeckOwl works from your own files, you can adjust the set whenever the class moves on.

Frequently asked questions

How many phonics flashcards should a child practice at once?

Start with five to eight new sound cards per session and repeat some earlier ones. Small sets keep young readers focused and reduce guessing.

What order should phonics sounds be taught in?

Most schemes start with single letter sounds, then move to digraphs such as sh and ch, then split digraphs such as a_e. If your school follows a specific scheme, use its order.

Can I export my phonics flashcards to Anki or print them?

Exports to Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV are paid features on the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month and no credit card.
