Why build your own phonics Anki deck

A ready-made set of letter-sound cards rarely follows the order and scope of your lessons, which is why a phonics Anki deck built from your own material tends to be more useful.

  • Cards follow the exact sounds and order in your own lessons
  • Flashcards cover letter sounds, digraphs, blends and spelling patterns
  • Spaced repetition brings back cards you find hardest
  • Export to Anki on the Plus plan, or study in the browser for free
Example phonics flashcards for early readers
What sound does the digraph sh make? The /sh/ sound, as in ship. Two letters make one sound.
What is a consonant blend? Two or three consonants said in sequence, each keeping its own sound, such as bl in blend.
What is the magic e pattern?A silent final e makes the vowel before a consonant say its long name, as in cap becoming cape.
What is a closed syllable?A syllable ending in a consonant, usually with a short vowel, as in mat or bed.
What is an r-controlled vowel?A vowel followed by r takes a sound of its own, as in car, her and bird.

Built from your material

Start from the worksheets, slides or word lists your class already uses, so the cards match the sounds you actually teach.

Photos work too

Snap a page of a phonics workbook or a whiteboard and text recognition reads it into the generator.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and ones you know are spaced further apart, so sound patterns stick.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or an image of your phonics material.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl turns the material into front and back cards for each sound, pattern or word.

Study or export

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki with the Plus plan.

Upload the scheme of work as a PDF, a word list as a DOCX, or slides from the lesson, and the generator turns each sound, blend and pattern into a flashcard. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition, so paper materials work as well.

Spaced repetition schedules reviews based on how well each card was recalled. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month, and Plus adds unlimited generations plus Anki export.

Frequently asked questions

What order should phonics skills be taught in?

Most structured programs start with letter-sound correspondence, then single consonants and short vowels, followed by blends, digraphs and long vowel patterns. Your curriculum or school scheme of work is the best guide for the exact sequence.

How long should a phonics study session be?

Short sessions work best for young learners, with a few new cards mixed in alongside cards they already know. Frequent brief reviews usually help more than one long session.

Can I export my phonics flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but Anki export is a Plus feature at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in your browser with 3 generations per month.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No, you can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students also get 40% off with a school email.
