Practise the sounds your child is learning this week

Read Write Inc sound lists are a good base, but a printed pack only covers what the publisher chose. Turning your own sound lists, worksheets or photos of classroom pages into phonics flashcards lets you practise exactly the sounds your child is working on right now.

  • Start with the sounds covered in class that week and add new ones as they are taught.
  • Say the sound first, then the whole word, and go back over any card your child misses.
  • Keep sessions short, about five to ten minutes, and practise most days rather than once a week.
  • Use photos of worksheets when you do not have the original file, and check the generated cards against the page.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study straight from the browser, so no app install is needed on a shared family computer.

How it works

Add your sound list

Upload the Read Write Inc sound list, a worksheet or a photo of the page your child brought home.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl creates flashcards from the text, with the sound or letter group on the front and the answer on the back.

Practise little and often

Work through the cards for a few minutes each day and let spaced repetition choose what comes back next.

DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain notes, and photos of pages using text recognition. The cards use spaced repetition, so the sounds that are harder for your child come back more often than the ones they already know.

Frequently asked questions

How many phonics flashcards should I make for one session?

Start with the sounds your child has covered in class, which is often around 10 to 20 cards. Add new cards as your child learns new sounds so the deck grows with them.

How do I use phonics flashcards at home?

Show the letter or letter group and ask your child to say the sound, then read a word that contains it. Repeat the cards your child gets wrong, and keep the session short so it stays positive.

Can I use my child's school sound lists with DeckOwl?

Yes, upload a PDF, Word file or photo of the sound list and DeckOwl will turn it into flashcards you can study in the browser on the free plan. Exporting to PDF, DOCX or Anki is part of the Plus plan, which costs $39 a year or $7.99 a month.

Does DeckOwl have a free plan?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students get 40% off with a school email.
