Why build your own set

Printable RWI phonics flashcards are easy to find, but a ready-made set rarely follows the order your group is working through. Most teachers and parents end up cutting and sorting cards by hand, then adding the words they actually need.

  • Cards follow the exact sounds and words in your own sheets, not a generic list.
  • Fred Talk words and sound-button practice can be written as front and back pairs.
  • Photos of printed charts are read with text recognition, so you do not need a digital copy.
  • Adjust the set each week as new sounds are introduced.
Example RWI phonics flashcards
What is Fred Talk in RWI phonics?Saying a word sound by sound, as Fred the frog does, before blending the sounds together to read the whole word.
What is a sound button?A dot placed under a letter or letter group to show that it makes one sound, so 'igh' in 'night' is one button, not three.
What is a digraph? Two letters that make one sound, such as 'sh' in 'ship' or 'ai' in 'rain'.
What is a trigraph?Three letters that make one sound, such as 'igh' in 'night' or 'air' in 'chair'.
How do you blend the word 'sat' in phonics?Say each sound in order, s-a-t, then run the sounds together quickly to read the whole word, sat.

Built from your sheets

Upload PDFs, slides, notes or photos of printed sound charts and word cards. Text is read from images too.

Spaced repetition

Sounds you find hard come back more often, while the ones a learner knows well appear less frequently.

Quizzes and mind maps

Turn the same material into multiple choice or true/false quizzes, or a mind map of how the sound groups connect.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the phonics sheet, word list or photo of the chart you are teaching from.

Review the cards

Check the generated flashcards and remove any sound or word your group has not reached yet.

Study in short sessions

Practise in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus.

DeckOwl starts from your own material. Upload the Speed Sounds chart, the storybook word lists or a photo of a page, and it creates flashcards for the sounds and words in that text. You can then remove anything not yet taught and keep the set matched to the current lesson.

Because the cards use spaced repetition, a learner sees the tricky grapheme and blend cards more often than the ones they already know, which makes short daily practice more useful.

Frequently asked questions

How many phonics flashcards should I make at one time?

Keep each set small and limited to the sounds a child has just been taught. Add new cards gradually and review older sounds regularly so earlier learning stays fresh.

How can I help a child practise Fred Talk at home?

Say a short word sound by sound, as Fred the frog would, and ask the child to blend the sounds back into the whole word. Use the flashcards to practise the individual sounds before going back to whole words.

Can I export my RWI phonics flashcards?

Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the Plus plan, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Is there a free plan to try this first?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students can get 40% off Plus with a school email.
