Why generate your own letter cards

Ready-made phonics flashcards for single letters A to Z are easy to find, but they rarely match the sound order, the keywords or the handwriting style your students already know. Starting from your own material keeps the cards aligned with what gets taught.

  • Works from PDFs, DOCX files, slides, plain notes and photos of pages
  • Covers single letters with their most common sounds and example words
  • Spaced repetition brings back the letters you miss more often
  • Free plan includes 3 generations per month with no credit card needed
Example single-letter phonics flashcards
Short sound of the letter A/æ/, as in apple, cat and hat
Letter C before e, i or y/s/, as in city and cent. Before a, o or u it is /k/, as in cat
Letter G before e, i or y/j/, as in gem and giant. Before a, o or u it is hard /g/, as in goat
Letter X at the start of a word/z/, as in xylophone. It sounds like /ks/ at the end of words like box
Letter Q and the letter that follows it/kw/, as in queen and quick. Q is almost always followed by U

Your letter sounds, your way

Upload your phonics handout or notes and the flashcards follow your wording, sound pictures and word examples.

Photos of worksheets work

Snap a page from a workbook or whiteboard. Text recognition reads it and turns the letters into cards.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner, so letters that give trouble get more practice than the ones already known.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, slides, a DOCX, plain notes or a photo of the page with the letters.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl creates one flashcard per letter or sound, with the letter on the front and the sound on the back.

Study in the browser

Review the set daily. The free plan covers 3 generations a month and studying in the browser.

Generated cards can cover the tricky parts that printed sets skip, such as the soft and hard sounds of C and G or the short and long vowel sounds. You can review them alone or with a partner, and the schedule adjusts to what you get right.

If you need files to print, Plus exports cards to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, so the same deck can go on paper or into another app.

Frequently asked questions

What sounds should single-letter phonics cards include?

Most cards show the letter on the front and its most common sound, such as /æ/ for short A, plus one example word. Letters with more than one sound, like C and G, often get a separate card for each sound.

How many letters should a beginner study at once?

Many teachers introduce three to five letters at a time and review them daily before adding more. Keep each new batch small so the student can recall the sounds without guessing.

Can I print these flashcards?

Printing and PDF export are part of the Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card and generate 3 sets a month. Students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
