Why build your own set instead of printing one

Printed sets are handy, but they follow one author's order and cover only the patterns on their pages. Many families already own an Usborne phonics book, and those pages can become phonics flashcards tailored to the child in front of you. Photograph the page, upload it, and review the cards that come out.

  • Works from photos of book pages, PDFs and handwritten notes
  • Cards follow the sounds on your own pages, not a fixed sequence
  • Review in the browser on any device
  • Export to Anki or CSV on the Plus plan
Example phonics flashcards for early readers
Which two letters make the /sh/ sound in "ship"?sh, a digraph where two letters together make one new sound
What sound does ph make in "phone"?/f/, as in "fish"; ph is used for this sound in words borrowed from Greek
What pattern is in "cake", and what does it do?a_e, a split digraph: the final e is silent and the a says its long sound /ā/
What sound does igh make in "night"?The long i sound /ī/; igh is a trigraph, and all three letters make one sound
Why does "catch" end in tch instead of ch?After a single short vowel, English usually spells /ch/ as tch, as in "match" and "fetch"

Any page becomes cards

Upload a PDF, photo or scan of a phonics page and the text is read and turned into question and answer cards.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know move further apart, so sounds stick without endless re-reading.

Sounds you choose

Keep only the letter patterns your child is working on now, and add new pages as the lessons move on.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, a photo of a page, a DOCX or plain notes. Images are read with text recognition.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl creates flashcards from the phonics content, one sound or pattern per card.

Study a little each day

Practice in the browser with spaced repetition, and see which sounds need another round.

Custom cards keep you on the current lesson. If your child is working on split digraphs one week and trigraphs the next, you can generate a fresh set from each page instead of hunting for a new printable. Spaced repetition then brings back the sounds that are still shaky.

Frequently asked questions

How many phonics sounds should a child learn in one session?

Keep sessions short and introduce only a few new sounds at a time. Mix in earlier sounds so older ones stay fresh while new ones settle.

Should I teach the split digraph a_e pattern before ough?

Most teaching sequences introduce single-sound letter patterns and the long vowel spellings first, then move to alternative spellings like ough. Follow the order in your child's own lessons where you can.

Can I export these flashcards to print or to Anki?

PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV exports are part of the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Is there a free way to try it first?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
