How to make phonics flashcards from your own lessons

Most ready-made printables follow a word list that may not match the order your school teaches it. DeckOwl takes your own lesson material, whether a PDF, slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a board, and builds Phonics International flashcards from it. Each card can cover a grapheme, a phoneme or a tricky word, and spaced repetition brings back the ones you miss.

  • Letter-sound cards with the grapheme on the front and the phoneme on the back
  • Tricky word cards kept separate from decodable words
  • Spaced repetition so weaker sounds come back sooner
  • Photos of worksheets read with text recognition
Example Phonics International flashcards
What is a grapheme?A letter or group of letters that represents one sound (phoneme), such as 'sh' in 'ship'.
Which grapheme makes the /f/ sound in 'phone'?ph, as in 'phone', 'graph' and 'elephant'.
What is a split digraph? Two letters separated by a consonant that together make one sound, such as a_e in 'cake'.
Which sound does 'ough' make in 'through'?/oo/, as in 'moon'. It is an exception, so it is often taught as a tricky spelling.
What is a tricky word in phonics?A word whose spelling cannot yet be decoded with known sound-letter links, such as 'said' or 'the', so it is learned by sight.

Built from your material

Your PDFs, slides, notes and photos of boards are read and turned into cards that match your lessons.

Spaced repetition

Cards you find hard return sooner, so sound and spelling links stick.

Exports on Plus

Anki, CSV, PDF and DOCX export are available on the Plus plan.

How it works

Upload your lesson material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a page.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl drafts flashcards from the sounds, spellings and tricky words in your material.

Study and review

Work through the deck in your browser and let spaced repetition set the pace.

Phonics teaching builds in sequence, so a good deck should mirror the order of your lessons. Keep each set to the sounds introduced that week, add a few tricky words, and mix in earlier graphemes so older sounds get reviewed.

The free plan gives you 3 generations per month and study in the browser. Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are on Plus at $99.90/year or $9.99/month, and students get 40% off with a school email. No credit card is needed to start.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for one phonics week?

Keep the set to the graphemes introduced that week, plus any tricky words from the same lessons. Adding a few review cards from earlier weeks helps older sounds stay fresh.

Should tricky words be on separate cards?

Yes, it helps to keep them apart from decodable words, because the sound-spelling rules that work for one may not apply to the other. Put the word on the front and the exception or reason on the back.

Can I export these cards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is available on the Plus plan at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Does this replace a Phonics International scheme?

No, DeckOwl does not supply the program's own resources. It turns the material you already have into flashcards for practice and review.
