Custom phonics flashcards, not a printable set

Printable sets are useful until your class moves past the sounds they cover. Phonics shed flashcards you make yourself follow the sequence you actually teach, from single letter-sound links through digraphs, split digraphs and tricky words.

  • Cards follow the order of your lesson slides or word lists.
  • Single sounds, digraphs, split digraphs and tricky words can each get their own set.
  • Photos of worksheets are read with text recognition, so you do not need to retype them.
  • Spaced repetition brings back the cards a child finds hardest.
Example phonics flashcards for early readers
What sound does the digraph sh make? The /sh/ sound, as in ship. Two letters make one sound.
What is a split digraph? Two vowel letters separated by a consonant that together make one long vowel sound, such as a_e in cake.
What is a trigraph?Three letters that make one sound, such as igh in night.
What is a tricky word in phonics?A word whose spelling cannot yet be fully sounded out, such as said or the, so children learn it by sight.
How many phonemes are in the word ship?Three: /sh/, /i/ and /p/. Phonemes are sounds, so the count can differ from the number of letters.

Your sequence

Upload the slides, word lists or notes you already teach from, and the cards follow that order.

Photos read too

Snap a worksheet or whiteboard and text recognition pulls the words and sounds onto cards.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so the sounds children find hard stay in rotation.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a page.

Generate cards

DeckOwl drafts flashcards with the sound or word on the front and the answer on the back.

Review little and often

Study in the browser on the free plan. PDF and Anki export are part of Plus.

Start with the sounds from this week's lesson rather than the whole scheme. A small set you review daily tends to be more useful than a long deck you rarely open, and cards can be added as the class progresses.

Because the cards come from your own material, you can keep decodable word lists, example words and sound pictures in the same order children hear them in class.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for a phonics set?

Start with one sound group or one week's lesson, which is often 10 to 20 cards. Add more as the class moves on, since smaller sets are easier to review every day.

What order should phonics flashcards follow?

Follow the sequence you teach, usually single letter-sound links first, then digraphs, split digraphs and tricky words. Matching the lesson order reinforces what children hear in class.

Can I print my flashcards?

Printing and PDF export are paid features on Plus, which also adds DOCX and Anki export. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser.

Do students get a discount?

Students get 40% off with a school email. No credit card is needed to start on the free plan.
