Why turn slides into flashcards

Lecture decks are built for presenting, not memorizing, so a single slide often hides the terms you need to recall on an exam. A PPT to flashcards generator pulls those terms and definitions out of the slides and turns each one into a question you can test yourself on.

  • Pull key terms and definitions from each slide
  • Cover slides with photos or scanned handouts too
  • Review with spaced repetition instead of cramming
  • Edit or regenerate cards when your lecture changes
Example Macbeth flashcards from a lecture slide
Who first predicts that Macbeth will become king? The three witches, also called the Weird Sisters, on the heath in Act 1, Scene 3.
What does Lady Macbeth urge her husband to do at Inverness?Murder King Duncan while he is their guest, because she fears Macbeth lacks the resolve to act.
What does Macbeth see before he kills Duncan?A dagger leading him toward the king's chamber, which shows his guilt and inner conflict about the murder in Act 2, Scene 1.
How does Banquo die, and who appears at the banquet?Hired murderers kill Banquo on Macbeth's orders, and Banquo's ghost appears at the feast in Act 3.
What does Macduff learn from Ross in England?Macbeth has had Macduff's wife, children and household killed, which drives Macduff to seek revenge in Act 4, Scene 3.

Reads your slides

Upload PPTX, PDF, DOCX, plain text or images. Photos of slides are read with text recognition.

Cards from your own material

Each flashcard comes from what is in your deck, so you study the content your instructor actually covered.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back at the intervals you need, so you review the hard ones more often and the easy ones less.

How it works

Upload your deck

Drag in a PPTX file or a photo of a printed slide. No formatting work is needed first.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl writes question and answer cards from the slide text and notes.

Study and review

Work through the cards in your browser and let spaced repetition schedule your reviews.

Retrieval practice works better than rereading a deck. Cards that ask you to recall a concept before flipping show you exactly where your understanding is thin.

You can start with the free plan, which includes three generations per month and studying in the browser. Plus adds unlimited generations and export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make from one lecture deck?

Aim for one card per key term, definition or cause-and-effect relationship rather than one per slide. A 30-slide deck often yields a manageable set of 40 to 80 cards once duplicates are removed.

Should I study slide titles or the details under them?

Study the details, because titles are easy to recognize but exams usually ask for the specifics beneath them. Write each card so it asks for one fact you could explain from memory.

Can I export the flashcards to Anki or a spreadsheet?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. Plus includes export to Anki and CSV, and the Pro plan adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.

Is there a free plan, and do I need a credit card?

The free plan gives you three generations per month and lets you study in the browser. No credit card is needed to start.
