How picture-based addition cards work

A worksheet full of dots and apples is a good starting point, but printable addition flash cards with pictures work best when they match the exact objects a child is learning with. DeckOwl does not hand out a ready-made set. It creates cards from your own material, so the pictures and counting prompts in your lesson become the cards.

  • Use the same objects from class so the picture supports the math
  • Keep sessions short, with a few new facts mixed into review
  • Count the combined groups aloud before checking the answer
  • Export to PDF on Plus when you want a printed set
Example picture-based addition flashcards for early grades
A bag has 4 red balls and 3 blue balls. How many balls are there in all?7 balls. Combine the two groups and count the total, or write 4 + 3 = 7.
Ten frame: 6 dots are filled. Add 3 more dots. How many dots now?9 dots. Start at 6 and count on 3 more: 7, 8, 9.
Ten frame: 8 dots are filled. Add 2 more dots. What is the total?10 dots. Two dots fill the frame exactly, so 8 + 2 makes ten.
Draw 5 circles, then draw 2 more circles. How many circles are there?7 circles. The two groups join into one set of 7, which is 5 + 2.
A picture shows 3 stars on the left and 4 stars on the right. How many stars in all?7 stars. Count all of them together, or count on from 4 by adding 3.

Pictures from your own lesson

Cards follow the objects, dots and groups in your worksheet or notes, so practice matches what your child already sees in class.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know come back later, so early addition facts stick without constant re-drilling.

Print or export on Plus

The free plan studies in the browser. Plus adds PDF export, so you can print a set, plus DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, a DOCX, slides, typed notes or a photo of the page. Text in photos is read with text recognition.

Review the picture cards

Check that each addition prompt and answer matches your lesson before you start studying.

Study or print

Practice in the browser on the free plan, or export to PDF on Plus to print a set for a table or a folder.

Upload a photo of a worksheet, a PDF or typed notes, and the generator writes question and answer cards from the text, including the descriptions of each picture. Counting groups, ten frames and number bonds to ten translate well into front and back prompts. Spaced repetition then brings back the facts a child is still working on.

Frequently asked questions

How many addition flashcards with pictures should a child practice at once?

Many early learners do well with 10 to 15 cards in a session, mixing a few new facts with ones they already know. Short daily practice usually works better than one long session.

How do pictures help kids learn addition facts?

Pictures show that addition means joining groups, and counting the combined set gives the child a way to check the answer. Ten frames and grouped dots make this clear for numbers up to 20.

Can I print the flashcards I make?

PDF export is part of the Plus plan, which costs $99.90 a year or $9.99 a month. The free plan lets you study in the browser and includes 3 generations per month.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can begin on the free plan without a credit card, and students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
