Why generate your own blends cards

Phonics teachers often hand out a sheet of consonant clusters, then find it does not match the words in this week's reading. If you need printable blends flashcards that match your own lesson, start from the material you already have.

  • Cards built from the exact word lists and worksheets you teach from
  • Initial blends (bl, cr, st) and final blends (nd, mp, nt) can be split into separate sets
  • Spaced repetition brings back the blends a student misses more often
  • PDF export for printing is included with Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month
Example consonant blends flashcards
Which blend starts the word "black"?bl. Both the b and the l keep their sounds, so you hear both in the word.
Which blend ends the word "hand"?nd. The n and the d are both pronounced before the word stops.
Is "sh" a blend or a digraph?A digraph. Two letters make one new sound that is not the sound of either letter alone.
Name the final blend in "camp" and "lamp".mp. The m and p each keep their sound, with the p following the m.
Name the initial blend in "crab" and "crib".cr. The c and r blend together, and both sounds are heard at the start of the word.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or a photo of a phonics page. The flashcards cover the blends your class actually uses.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know fade into longer gaps, so blends like bl, cr and nt stay in memory.

Print or export on Plus

The free plan studies in the browser. Plus adds PDF export for printing, plus DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

How it works

Upload your lesson

Add the worksheet, slides or notes you already have. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.

DeckOwl creates cards for the blends in that material, with the sound or word on the front and the answer on the back.

Study or print

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export a PDF to print with Plus.

A consonant blend is two or three consonants whose sounds run together, like the bl in black or the nt at the end of hand. Each consonant keeps its own sound, which separates a blend from a digraph such as sh, where two letters make one new sound. Cards that ask students to sort and name these patterns work best when the examples come from their own word lists.

Generating from your material also means the cards follow your order of teaching. Start with initial blends, then move to final blends once students can read them, and review the earlier groups as the spaced repetition schedule brings them back.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a blend and a digraph?

In a blend, each consonant keeps its own sound, as in the bl of black. In a digraph, two letters make one new sound, as in sh or ch.

How many blends should a student learn in one unit?

Most phonics units focus on a small group, such as four to six initial blends, before moving on to final blends. Keep each set short enough that students can read the words in it without help.

Can I print my flashcards?

Yes, PDF export is included with Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and needs no credit card. Students can get 40% off Plus with a school email.
