Why build your own kana cards instead of downloading a sheet

Hiragana and katakana are learned fastest in small batches, and printable kana flashcards are a common way to drill them. Ready-made sheets rarely match the rows your class covers or the lookalike characters that trip you up, so a generic download often wastes study time. DeckOwl works from your own material instead: upload a chart, a worksheet photo or your notes, and the generator builds a set around what you actually need to learn.

  • Covers both hiragana and katakana from your own chart
  • Photos of printed or handwritten charts are read with text recognition
  • Free plan: 3 generations a month, study in the browser
  • Plus: unlimited generations and PDF export for printing
Example hiragana and katakana flashcards
ね (hiragana)ne, as in neko (cat)
ツ (katakana)tsu, the sound at the start of tsunami
Which katakana is shi: シ or ソ?シ is shi and ソ is so. Compare the stroke shapes before you memorize them.
は (hiragana) used as the topic particlePronounced wa, even though it is written as ha in other words.
ヲ (katakana)wo, used almost only as an object particle in modern Japanese.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell similar kana like shi and tsu apart?

Learn them in pairs and focus on the stroke order and shape differences, such as シ for shi and ツ for tsu. Quizzing yourself with the sound first and the character second helps the difference stick.

Should I learn hiragana before katakana?

Most courses start with hiragana because it covers native words and grammar, then move to katakana for loanwords and foreign names. Learning both in parallel works too if you practice a little of each every day.

Can I print my kana flashcards?

Yes, but PDF export is a Plus feature at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study the generated cards in the browser without exporting them.

How many kana should I add to each flashcard set?

Start with one row of the chart, such as the a, i, u, e, o row, and add more once you can recall those quickly. Smaller sets reviewed often work better than one large set reviewed rarely.
