Printing sight word cards from your own list

Many teachers want printable sight word flash cards with pictures, but a ready-made set rarely matches the words a child is working on this week. DeckOwl does not offer a library of printable sheets. Instead, you make cards from the exact list you already have.

  • Start with the words from one reading unit, not the whole year.
  • Keep the picture cue simple and tied to the word's meaning.
  • Say the word aloud together before the child flips the card.
  • Review missed cards again the same day, then let spaced review space them out.
Example sight word flashcards with picture cues
saidPicture cue: a speech bubble coming from a mouth. Read it as a whole word, since the ai does not sound like ay.
friendPicture cue: two children sharing a swing. The ie here sounds like a short e, so say it as one word.
comePicture cue: a child waving at an open door. The o says uh here, not oh, so learn the whole word.
wherePicture cue: a map with a red pin. Ask where with the picture so the word connects to a place.
becausePicture cue: a child with an umbrella next to a rainy window. Read it as one word after you have decoded its two parts once.

Built from your own words

Upload the sight words your child is learning this week, from a teacher list, a worksheet or a photo, and get cards that match them.

Picture cues you can add

Pair each word with an image or a short description of one, so the card links the word to a meaning the child can picture.

Spaced review

Cards you miss come back sooner and words you know move out of the daily pile, so practice stays short.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, slides, plain text notes or a photo of a word list. Text recognition reads the words from photos.

Generate the flashcards

DeckOwl turns the words into flashcards. Review them and edit any card before you study.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan. On Plus, export to PDF to print, or to Anki or CSV.

Picture cues help when a word has no clear sound pattern, such as said or friend. Write a short description of a picture for each card, or use a photo from your own materials, and keep the word itself on the front.

Once the cards are made, short daily sessions with spaced review work better than one long drill. Print them on Plus or keep studying in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

How many sight words should a child learn at once?

Many teachers introduce a small group at a time and review them every day. Keep sessions short, and add new words only after the current group is reliable.

Do picture cues help with sight words?

Picture cues can help a child connect a word to its meaning, especially for words that do not follow regular spelling rules. Pair them with reading the word in a sentence so the picture is not the only clue.

Does DeckOwl include ready-made sight word sets?

No. Flashcards are generated from your own material, such as a word list, slides or a photo of a worksheet.

Can I print my flashcards?

Printing is done by exporting to PDF, which is part of the Plus plan at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.
