Get Quizlet-style flashcards that face the right way
Upload your own material and DeckOwl turns it into flashcards with the question on the front and the answer on the back, then schedules reviews with spaced repetition.
Why the direction of a flashcard matters
When a deck of quizlet flashcards set up the wrong way shows the definition first, you practice matching answers to words instead of producing the answer from memory. That reversal can make a deck feel easy while the real recall stays weak.
- Put the question or term on the front so you have to retrieve the answer.
- Keep each card to one fact so a wrong answer shows you exactly what to fix.
- Review cards in both directions only when the material calls for it, such as language vocabulary.
- Regenerate a deck from your own notes when the old cards are backwards or out of date.
Questions on the front
Each card is written as a question or term on the front and the answer on the back, so you recall before you check.
Built from your material
Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or photos of pages, and the cards come from what you actually need to learn.
Spaced repetition
Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know move further apart, so review time goes to the right answers.
How it works
Upload your notes
Add a PDF, slide deck, document, text file or a photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.
Generate the cards
DeckOwl writes flashcards with the term or question on the front and the answer on the back.
Review in the right direction
Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus if you want cards elsewhere.
The fix is to build cards where the prompt asks for the thing you need to remember. A term on the front and its definition on the back works for vocabulary and terminology, while a question on the front works better for concepts and processes. Either way, check a few cards before you study the whole set.

Frequently asked questions
Should I study flashcards in both directions?
Do it for vocabulary, such as a word and its translation, because recalling each side strengthens the link. For concepts and processes, one clear question on the front is usually more useful than a reversed card.
Why does recalling the answer work better than rereading it?
Pulling an answer from memory forces the brain to rebuild the connection, which is harder but more durable than recognizing a printed answer. Spaced reviews add to this by showing each card just before you are likely to forget it.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and you do not need a credit card to start.
Can I export my flashcards?
Exports are part of the paid plans. Plus at $39 per year or $7.99 per month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and students get 40 percent off with a school email.
