Why custom cards beat generic printables

Printable sheets are easy to find, but they rarely match the words your child is actually learning this week. Making scholastic sight words flashcards from the list in front of you keeps practice focused on what matters.

  • Generate cards from the exact word list your child is learning
  • Keep sessions short, five to ten minutes a day
  • Add missed words to the deck as you find them
  • Print or export your deck if you have a paid plan
Example sight word flashcards for early readers
Why is 'the' usually learned by sight? Its vowel is pronounced 'uh' before a consonant and 'thee' before a vowel, so it does not follow one simple sound rule.
Why is 'said' hard to sound out?The 'ai' makes a short /e/ sound, not the long /ā/ sound that 'ai' usually makes in words like 'rain'.
Why does 'was' break the short a rule?In 'was' the a sounds like /o/ as in 'wash', not the short a in 'cat'.
Which of these is the number: to, too or two? Two. 'To' is a preposition and 'too' means also or very, but all three sound the same.
Does 'come' rhyme with 'home' or 'some'?Some. The o in 'come' makes a short /uh/ sound, unlike the long o in 'home'.

How it works

Add your word list

Upload a file or snap a picture of the list your child's teacher sent home.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl creates one card per word, with the word on the front and a simple prompt or meaning on the back.

Review little and often

Practice for five to ten minutes a day and let spaced repetition bring back the words that need work.

Sight words are common words that readers should recognize instantly, because many of them do not follow phonics rules. Words like 'the', 'was' and 'said' are learned by sight, so repeated short reviews work well.

Start with the list from school, then add any words your child keeps missing. Over a few weeks, the deck grows to match their reading level.

Frequently asked questions

How many sight words should a child learn in kindergarten?

Many kindergarten and first grade programs introduce a few dozen high-frequency words, while longer lists like the Dolch and Fry lists run into the hundreds. Ask your child's teacher which list they use so your practice matches school.

How long should a sight word study session be?

Five to ten minutes a day works better than one long session for most young readers. Spaced repetition helps by showing missed words again sooner.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but exports are not included.

Can I print or export my flashcards?

Exports are part of the paid plans. Plus, at $39 per year or $7.99 per month, includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.
