Why your own sight word list works better

Most printable sets were written for a different class, so the words on them may not match what your 2nd graders are learning. Use 2nd grade sight word flash cards built from the exact list you hand out, and the practice stays on track with the week's reading.

  • Upload a list in any supported format, including a photo of a worksheet
  • Sound-out tips and meanings can sit on the back of each card
  • Review the hard words more often and the easy ones less often
  • Export to PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV on the Plus plan
Example 2nd grade sight word flash cards
Spell the sight word: friendf-r-i-e-n-d. Read it in chunks: fri-end. The 'ie' is part of the word, so do not try to sound out every letter.
arounda-round. Read the two parts separately, then blend them. 'Round' rhymes with 'sound'.
thoughtth-ough-t. The 'ough' sounds like 'aw' here, and the word rhymes with 'bought'.
believebe-lieve. The 'ie' makes a long e sound, so the 'i' comes before the 'e' in this word.
differentdif-fer-ent. Clap the three syllables, then say the whole word smoothly.

Built from your list

Upload a PDF, slide deck, typed notes or a photo of the word list and get cards for exactly those words.

Spaced repetition

Words a child misses come back sooner, and words they know fade into longer gaps between reviews.

How it works

Upload your word list

Add a PDF, DOCX, slide deck, plain text or a photo of the page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl turns the words into flash cards, with the word on the front and a short prompt or meaning on the back.

Practice a little each day

Work through the deck in short sessions, and let spaced repetition decide which words need another look.

A good deck also keeps older words in rotation. Children tend to forget words they learned a month ago, so the review should mix new and familiar words instead of drilling one list until the end of the unit.

Because the cards come from your own material, you can add words from a classroom story or a spelling list without starting over. Adjust the deck as the class moves through the year.

Frequently asked questions

How many sight words should a 2nd grader learn at a time?

Many teachers introduce a small group of words each week and review them daily. Keep practice sessions short and mix in words the child has already learned.

What is the best way to practice sight words with flash cards?

Have the child read each word aloud before flipping the card, then sort the cards into known and still learning piles. Spaced repetition brings the hard words back more often than the ones already mastered.

Can I export my sight word cards to print or Anki?

PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export are part of the Plus plan. The Free plan lets you study the cards in your browser, with 3 generations per month and no exports.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the Free plan without a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
