How to practice sight words with flash cards

Early readers often memorize sight words before they can sound them out, so sight word flash cards work best when they come from the words your child is actually learning. A printed set from a store covers a generic list, but a teacher's sheet or a school reading level can be quite different.

  • Use the word list your child's teacher sent home, not a generic set
  • Keep each session to a few minutes so practice stays fresh
  • Read every card aloud and have your child repeat it
  • Review the words your child misses more often than the ones they know
Example sight word flash cards for early readers
Sight word: saidIrregular spelling. The 'ai' makes a short e sound, so learn this word as a whole unit.
Sight word: whatThe 'wh' makes a /w/ sound and the 'a' makes a short o sound, so it does not follow a simple pattern.
Sight word: theyThe 'ey' spelling makes a long a sound, which is unusual, so practice the whole word by sight.
Sight word: comeThe 'o' makes a short u sound, as in 'some', instead of the long o sound in 'home'.
Sight word: wasPronounced 'wuz', because the 'a' has a short u sound. It is a common exception to the usual rule.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, a photo of a word list, or typed notes. The cards use the exact words your child is working on.

Spaced repetition

Words your child misses come back sooner, and words they know are shown less often, so review time goes to the hard ones.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Once the words stick, switch to a short quiz with multiple choice or true/false questions, or map word families on a mind map.

How it works

Add the word list

Upload a PDF, DOCX, slide deck, or a photo of the printed list. Photos are read with text recognition.

Generate the flash cards

DeckOwl turns the list into flashcards, with the word on the front and the answer on the back.

Study a few minutes a day

Practice in the browser on the free plan. Spaced repetition brings back the words that need more time.

Make the cards from your own material, then keep sessions short. Say each word aloud, spell it, and use it in a simple sentence. Words that are irregular, like the ones with silent letters or unusual vowel sounds, are the ones that usually need the most repetition.

DeckOwl creates text flashcards and does not offer spoken audio, so read each card aloud with your child or use your device's own reader for the words.
