Practice Spanish syllable division with cards you control

Dividing Spanish words into syllables is easier when each rule has its own card, and Spanish syllable flashcards let you drill those rules from your own class material. Most words follow a short list of patterns: a single consonant between vowels goes with the vowel that follows, consonant pairs like bl or pr usually stay together, and vowel pairs either stay in one syllable or split apart depending on which vowels they are.

  • Mark diphthongs: vowel pairs like ie in cielo stay in one syllable, so cielo is cie-lo
  • Mark hiatus: two strong vowels in a row, as in leer, split into separate syllables
  • Add the stress rule to each card so the accent is part of the answer
  • Review the cards you miss most often, since spaced repetition schedules them sooner
Example Spanish syllable flashcards
Divide 'casa' into syllablesca-sa (2 syllables), with one vowel sound in each syllable.
Divide 'murciélago' into syllablesmur-cié-la-go (4 syllables). The vowel pair ie is a diphthong, so it stays together.
Divide 'leer' into syllablesle-er (2 syllables). Two strong vowels in a row form a hiatus, so they split apart.
Is 'cuidado' divided as cui-da-do or cu-i-da-do?cui-da-do. The weak vowels u and i form one diphthong, so they stay in the same syllable.
Where is the stress in 'árbol'?On ár, the first syllable. Words ending in a consonant other than n or s are stressed on the last syllable, so the written accent marks this exception.

Stress is the other half of the skill. Spanish words ending in a vowel, n or s are usually stressed on the second-to-last syllable, and a written accent mark signals the exceptions. Cards that show the word, its syllable split and its stressed syllable together make the rule concrete, so you can apply it to new vocabulary on a quiz instead of memorizing lists.

Frequently asked questions

How many syllable flashcards should I make for Spanish?

Start with one card per rule, covering diphthongs, hiatus, consonant clusters and stress. Then add five to ten words that use each rule, and add more once the patterns feel automatic.

How can I check my syllable splits?

Say each word aloud and count its vowel sounds, since every syllable has one vowel nucleus and a diphthong still counts as one. Then compare your split with your textbook or teacher's answer key.

Are ready-made printable sheets better than my own cards?

Ready-made sheets can help with general practice, but cards built from your own class notes match the words your teacher actually uses. DeckOwl generates those cards from your material, and you can study them in the browser on the Free plan.

Can I export my syllable flashcards?

Exports are a paid feature: Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export. Students get 40% off with a school email, and no credit card is needed to start.
