How to build A-Level economics flashcards that stick

Economics A-Level papers reward precise definitions and the chains that link them, so A-Level economics flashcards should hold one idea each: a term on the front, a tight definition or causal chain on the back.

  • Front: the term or a question. Back: the definition, formula or one-sentence explanation.
  • Make separate cards for the causes and consequences of the same policy.
  • Keep diagram labels on their own cards, such as the shifts in the AD-AS model.
  • Re-check cards you get wrong before the next mock exam.
Example A-Level economics flashcards
Price elasticity of demandThe responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price, calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price.
Opportunity costThe value of the next best alternative forgone when a choice is made.
Consumer surplusThe difference between the maximum price a consumer would pay and the price they actually pay.
Multiplier effectAn initial injection of spending leads to a larger final rise in national income, since each round of spending becomes someone else's income.
Quantitative easingCentral bank purchases of financial assets, such as government bonds, to increase the money supply and lower long-term interest rates.

Works from your material

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or photos of pages. Text in images is read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at the intervals your memory needs, so topics like elasticity stay fresh before the exam.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Switch to multiple choice, true/false or short answer questions with explanations, or map a topic as a mind map.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or image of your class notes.

Generate flashcards

The AI turns key terms, definitions and causal chains into cards you can edit.

Review on schedule

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus.

DeckOwl reads your own material, whether that is a photographed page of notes, a slide deck from class or a past-paper mark scheme saved as PDF, and drafts cards from it. You review and edit the drafts, which keeps the content tied to your syllabus rather than generic textbook wording.

Spaced repetition then schedules each card so the ones you miss come back sooner. Economics has many overlapping terms, such as price elasticity of demand and income elasticity, so frequent short reviews help keep them separate.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for an A-Level economics topic?

Most topics work well with 15 to 30 cards covering key definitions, formulas and causal chains. Split long units, such as macroeconomics, into smaller decks so each review session stays focused.

What should go on the back of an economics flashcard?

Keep the answer to a definition, a formula or a short causal chain, such as how a rise in interest rates reduces investment and aggregate demand. Add an example only if you can recall it under exam conditions.

Can I export the flashcards to Anki or CSV?

Yes, but exports are part of the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser with 3 generations per month.

Does DeckOwl work with photos of my notes?

Yes. Images such as photos of pages are read with text recognition and turned into flashcards from the recognized text. Check the text before you study, especially for handwritten notes.
