Why a custom deck works better than a generic one

Many teachers and parents working through UFLI lessons already have the lesson sheets, word lists and slides, but a generic deck of UFLI phonics flashcards rarely matches the exact patterns a child is learning this week. Building cards from your own material keeps practice tied to the lesson in front of you.

  • Cards follow the exact sounds and word lists from your lesson pages
  • Photos of printed worksheets can be read with text recognition
  • Spaced repetition keeps earlier patterns in review after new lessons start
  • Paid plans export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV for printing or other tools
Example UFLI phonics flashcards
What sound does the digraph sh make? The /sh/ sound, as in ship. Two letters together make one sound.
What is a closed syllable?A syllable ending in a consonant with a short vowel sound, such as hat or bed.
What does the magic e pattern do?A silent e at the end of a word makes the vowel before it say its long name, as in cake.
What is a consonant blend? Two or more consonants said together where each keeps its own sound, such as st in stop.
What is an r-controlled vowel?A vowel followed by r that changes its sound, as in car, her or fork.

Built from your files

Upload PDFs, slides, notes or photos of worksheets. Text in photos is read with text recognition, so a printed lesson page works as well as a digital copy.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back more often and cards you know appear less often, so sound-spelling patterns stay in memory between lessons.

Study in the browser

Free accounts can study flashcards in the browser right away. Paid plans add PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export for printing or other apps.

How it works

Upload your lesson material

Add a PDF, slide deck, text notes or a photo of the page. No card is needed to start.

Review the generated cards

Check the sound, letter pattern or word on each card and remove anything you do not want to practice.

Study on a schedule

Work through the deck in short sessions. Spaced repetition brings back the cards that need more practice.

If you want a printable set, you can still make one from your own copies. Generate the cards from the pages you have, then review them on screen or export them on a paid plan. Start with one lesson, check that the cards match what was taught, and expand from there.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should a child practice in one session?

Short sessions of about 10 to 15 cards usually work well for early readers. Focus on the new pattern from the day's lesson and mix in a few older cards for review.

What is the difference between a digraph and a blend?

A digraph is two letters that make one new sound, such as sh in ship. A blend is two or more consonants that each keep their own sound, such as st in stop.

Can I make flashcards for free?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exporting to PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV requires a paid plan.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start without a credit card. Students can get 40% off paid plans with a school email.
