Making flashcards from PDFs you already have

Many students keep lecture handouts, textbook chapters and reading packets as PDFs, then need a way to turn them into study cards without retyping anything. An AI flashcard generator for UPDF files can read those documents and pull out terms, definitions and facts that are worth memorizing.

  • Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages
  • Get flashcards with spaced repetition scheduling
  • Generate quizzes with explanations from the same material
  • Free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study
Example flashcards from PDF study material
What does PDF stand for, and what is it designed to preserve?Portable Document Format. It is designed to keep the layout, fonts and images of a document the same across devices and programs.
What is OCR?Optical character recognition. It converts text in a scanned page or photo into machine-readable text that can be searched and processed.
What is spaced repetition?A study method that reviews each item at increasing intervals, timed to come just before you would likely forget it.
What is active recall?Pulling an answer from memory before checking it. Retrieving information strengthens memory more than rereading the same passage.
What is the difference between DOCX and PDF?DOCX is an editable Word document format, while PDF is built to display a fixed layout consistently, so it is better for sharing final versions.

Works with the files you already have

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or images. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you find hard come back sooner, and cards you know move further apart so review time goes where it helps most.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same material into multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions with explanations, or into a mind map.

How it works

Upload your document

Drop in a PDF exported from UPDF or any other source, or paste your notes. No credit card is needed to start.

Review the generated cards

Check the flashcards DeckOwl creates, edit anything that needs fixing, and remove cards you do not need.

Study on a spacing schedule

Study in the browser on the free plan. Plus adds Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV export along with unlimited generations.

The useful part is the review schedule. Spaced repetition shows each card again just before you would likely forget it, so a few short sessions each week do more than one long cram night. Exports to Anki or CSV are available on Plus if you want to keep studying elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make from a single PDF chapter?

Aim for one card per distinct fact, term or cause and effect relationship, which often means 20 to 40 cards for a typical chapter. Cards that test two ideas at once are harder to recall, so split them up when you can.

Why does spaced repetition work better than rereading notes?

Retrieving an answer from memory strengthens recall more than seeing it again on the page does. Spacing reviews out over days gives you practice at the moment you are starting to forget, which is when a review helps most.

Can I export the flashcards I make from a PDF?

Exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export. The free plan lets you study in the browser.

Is DeckOwl the same as UPDF?

No. DeckOwl is a separate study tool that accepts PDFs, and it is not affiliated with UPDF. You can upload any PDF to DeckOwl, regardless of the program that created it.
