How to build Vietnamese vocabulary study cards

Vietnamese is tonal, so a plain word list rarely covers what you need. Many words differ only by their tone mark, and Vietnamese vocabulary flashcards that show the accented form, the meaning and an example sentence make those differences easier to remember. DeckOwl reads your own material and turns it into cards you can review on a schedule.

  • Include the accent and tone mark on the front of every card
  • Add one example sentence per word so the context sticks
  • Group minimal pairs like ma, má and mà together to compare them
  • Keep daily reviews short and frequent rather than in long sessions
Example Vietnamese vocabulary flashcards for beginners
xin chàohello, a greeting that works at any time of day
cảm ơnthank you
bao nhiêu tiền?How much does it cost? (literally: how many money)
nhà vệ sinhbathroom or toilet
tôiI or me, a first-person pronoun that changes depending on who you are speaking to

Reads your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or photos of pages, and get cards from the words in them.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back on a schedule that adjusts to how well you remember each word.

Export when you need it

Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export so you can study in the tools you already use.

How it works

Add your words

Upload a vocabulary list, a PDF, slides or a photo of a textbook page.

Generate the cards

Check the flashcards and fix any accents or meanings that need correcting.

Study on a schedule

Spaced repetition shows each card again just before you would be likely to forget it.

Start with what you already have: a vocabulary list from class, the glossary at the back of a textbook or photos of handwritten notes. Images are read with text recognition, so a snapped page becomes cards without retyping. Check each card once, since recognition can miss diacritics, and correct any that need it.

Spaced repetition then brings each card back just before you would forget it. Easy words appear less often and difficult tones come back sooner, so your review time goes to the words that need it most.

Frequently asked questions

How many Vietnamese words should I learn at once?

Most learners do better with a small daily batch of new words than with a long list at once. Review those cards often so they move into long-term memory.

How do I practice Vietnamese tones with flashcards?

Write the tone mark on the front of each card and record yourself saying the word, then compare it with a native speaker recording. Keep minimal pairs like ma, má and mà on cards side by side so the differences stand out.

Is DeckOwl free to use?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the paid Plus plan.

Can I export my Vietnamese flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included in Plus, which costs $99.90/year or $9.99/month. Students get 40% off with a school email.
