How to build a language vocabulary deck that sticks

Learning a language starts with words, and language vocabulary flashcards work best when they come from the exact lists your class or textbook uses.

  • Put one word per card, with the part of speech and gender if your language uses it.
  • Add a sample sentence on the back so the word is learned in context.
  • Keep separate decks for each unit so you can review older vocabulary alongside new.
  • Study in short daily sessions rather than one long cram before a test.
Example Spanish and French vocabulary flashcards
Spanish: la bibliotecaThe library, a feminine noun that takes the article la.
French: Je voudraisI would like, a polite way to order something or make a request.
German: der HundThe dog. Der marks a masculine noun, so learn the article with the word.
Japanese: 水 (mizu)Water, read as mizu with a short u at the end.
Italian: avere fameTo be hungry, literally 'to have hunger', which is why avere is used rather than essere.

Any source

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of vocabulary pages. Photos are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so new words move into long-term memory.

Export when you need it

Plus and Pro export to Anki and CSV. The free plan studies in the browser.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a unit's word list, textbook chapter or photographed flashcard sheet.

Generate cards

DeckOwl creates front-and-back cards from the words and their definitions.

Review on schedule

Study daily. Spaced repetition brings back the words you find hardest.

Good cards pair a word with a short example sentence and its translation, not just a single definition. Review in short daily sessions, and let spaced repetition show you which words need more time.

Frequently asked questions

How many vocabulary words should I learn each week?

Most learners do well with a small, steady set of new words, adding more only after the previous ones feel familiar. Review older words regularly so they stay in memory.

Should flashcards show the word or the translation first?

Try both directions, since recognizing a word and producing it from memory are different skills. Reversing the cards after the first few weeks builds recall.

Can I make language flashcards from a photo of my notes?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition and turned into flashcards from the recognized text. Check the cards once to fix any misread letters.

Do I need to pay to export my flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki and CSV export are part of the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.
