How the concept map format works

A concept map format organizes ideas as nodes connected by labeled lines, starting from the broadest concept at the top and moving to specific details below. Unlike a plain outline, each link label states the relationship, so every connection reads as a short sentence.

  • Start with one broad concept at the top of the map.
  • Write linking phrases as short verbs or relationships, such as leads to or depends on.
  • Keep each node to a few words so the map stays readable.
  • Add cross-links between branches when two topics relate.
Example concept map format questions and answers
What does each node in a concept map contain? One concept or idea, usually a short term or phrase rather than a full paragraph.
What turns two nodes into a proposition?A labeled link joining them, such as photosynthesis produces oxygen.
Where is the broadest concept usually placed? At the top of the map, with more specific concepts branching downward.
Why add cross-links in a concept map? They show relationships between branches that a single tree structure would hide.
What makes a good linking phrase?A short verb or relationship such as causes, requires, or is part of, so the sentence reads clearly.

Concepts in nodes

Each key idea sits in its own node, so the map shows one concept at a time.

Labeled links

Short linking phrases on each line explain how two concepts relate, such as causes or requires.

Editable and explorable

Edit nodes after generation, expand branches, and collapse sections you have already learned.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of a page.

Review the generated map

Check the main concepts and linking phrases, then rename or move any node.

Study from the map

Explore the branches in your browser, and export on a paid plan when you need the file.

DeckOwl applies this structure to your own material. Upload lecture slides or chapter notes, and the generated map keeps your terminology while you edit nodes and links to match your course.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a concept map and a mind map?

A mind map radiates from one central topic, while a concept map labels each link with a relationship and can connect branches to one another. Use a concept map when the relationships between ideas matter most.

How many nodes should a concept map for a chapter have?

There is no fixed number, but a chapter map is easier to review when it stays focused on the main ideas. Add detail nodes only where a term needs explaining.

Can I export a concept map to use elsewhere?

Exports are a paid feature: Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export. The free plan lets you study the map in your browser with three generations per month.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, the free plan includes three generations per month and browser study. No credit card is needed to start, and students get 40% off Plus with a school email.
