What a concept map shows and how to build one from your notes

A concept map is a diagram where boxes hold ideas and labeled arrows explain how each pair connects, such as leads to, requires, or is part of. Unlike a plain list, it shows relationships, so you can see how a process, theory, or system fits together.

  • Put the focus question in the center and branch outward from it.
  • Label every arrow with a short phrase that states the relationship.
  • Add cross-links between branches to show ideas that span topics.
  • Check the finished map against your textbook and drop any term you cannot explain.
Example concept map branches from a biology unit
Light-dependent reactionsOccur in thylakoid membranes · Split water and release oxygen · Produce ATP and NADPH
Calvin cycleTakes place in the stroma · Fixes carbon dioxide into sugar · Uses ATP and NADPH from the light reactions
Cellular respirationGlycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm · Krebs cycle runs in the mitochondrial matrix · Electron transport chain sits on the inner membrane
OsmosisMovement of water across a semipermeable membrane · Flows from lower to higher solute concentration · Needs no energy input
EnzymesBiological catalysts that speed up reactions · Lower activation energy · Are reusable and specific to a substrate

Upload any source

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of a page read with text recognition.

Editable and explorable

Adjust branches and follow each link to see how ideas relate, at whatever pace you need.

Study from the map

Turn the same material into flashcards with spaced repetition or into quizzes with explanations.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add the chapter, slides, or page photos you need to understand.

Generate the map

DeckOwl pulls out the main concepts and proposes how they connect.

Edit and explore

Change branches that look wrong and follow links to check your understanding.

Drawing one by hand takes time, especially when a chapter has dozens of terms. DeckOwl reads your material and proposes a starting map that you can edit, so you spend your time checking the links instead of drawing boxes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a concept map and a mind map?

A concept map links ideas with labeled arrows and can form networks in any direction. A mind map radiates outward from one central idea, which makes it simpler but less detailed for showing relationships.

How many terms should a good concept map include for a chapter?

Most chapters work well with 10 to 20 key terms, enough to show the main structure without clutter. Add more only when a sub-topic needs its own branch.

Can I export my concept map?

Exporting to PDF, DOCX, Anki, or CSV is part of the Plus plan at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. The free plan gives you 3 generations per month without a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
