How a mind map helps you study

Lecture notes are linear, so the connections between ideas get buried in paragraphs. To create a mind map for studying, you pull the central topic into the middle and place each supporting idea around it. The layout shows which concepts depend on which, and that structure is easier to remember than a page of text.

  • Start with one central question or topic, then add the main concepts as first-level branches.
  • Keep each sub-point to a short phrase so you can test yourself from the branch label alone.
  • Use a separate branch for formulas, definitions, and worked examples so they are easy to find.
  • Revisit the map a day later and redraw any branch you cannot explain from memory.
Example mind map branches for the Pythagorean theorem
Right triangle definitionExactly one 90-degree angle · Hypotenuse is the longest side · Hypotenuse sits opposite the right angle
Pythagorean formulaa² + b² = c² · c is the hypotenuse · a and b are the two legs
Converse of the theoremIf a² + b² = c², the triangle is right · Used to test whether a corner is square
Common Pythagorean triples3, 4, 5 · 5, 12, 13 · 8, 15, 17 · Multiplying a triple by a constant gives another triple
Real-world usesChecking a square corner with 3-4-5 · Finding diagonal distance · Measuring straight-line distance on a grid

Built from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages. Text in images is read with text recognition.

Editable branches

Rename, move, or delete nodes as your understanding changes. The map follows your structure, not a fixed template.

Explorable at any depth

Start with the main topics and expand only the branches you need to review. Each level keeps the same context.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file, or photo of your notes. No credit card is needed to start.

Generate the map

DeckOwl pulls out the main concepts and arranges them as branches and sub-points.

Edit and study

Reshape the map, then expand each branch to check your recall before your exam.

A good study map keeps branches short and specific. Two to four sub-points per branch is usually enough to recall the idea without re-reading the source. When a branch gets crowded, split it into its own map.

Because the map is editable, it works as a living summary. Move ideas as you learn, delete what you already know cold, and add notes where you keep getting stuck.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a mind map for the Pythagorean theorem?

Put the theorem in the center, then add branches for the right triangle definition, the formula a² + b² = c², the hypotenuse, and real-world uses. Check each branch by explaining it aloud without looking.

How many branches should a study mind map have?

Most useful maps have between four and seven main branches, each with two to four sub-points. If a branch needs more detail, split it into a separate map.

Is there a free plan for making mind maps?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports. No credit card is needed to start.

Which plan lets me export my study materials?

Exports are part of the Plus plan, which costs $99.90/year or $9.99/month and includes unlimited generations. Students get 40% off with a school email.
