Why map the parts of a friendly letter

A friendly letter has five parts, and friendly letter mind map examples show how they connect: heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature. Seeing each part as a branch makes it easier to remember where the date goes and where the comma belongs.

  • Map the five parts in the order they appear on the page
  • Add punctuation rules to each branch, such as commas after the greeting and closing
  • Trade maps with a classmate and check each other's branches
  • Turn branches into flashcards before a quiz on letter format

Frequently asked questions

What belongs in the heading of a friendly letter?

The heading holds the writer's street address, city, state, and ZIP code, followed by the date. Some teachers want it aligned to the right, so check your class handout.

Where does the comma go in a friendly letter greeting and closing?

The greeting ends with a comma, as in Dear Grandma, and the closing phrase ends with a comma too. Only the first word of the closing is capitalized, so write Your friend, not Your Friend.

Can I export my friendly letter mind map?

Free accounts can study in the browser but cannot export. PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV export are included on Plus at $39 per year or $7.99 per month.

Can DeckOwl read a photo of my letter-writing notes?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can upload a picture of your notes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month.
