What a good concept map does while you study

Start with concept maps for studying by choosing one central question, then sorting the lecture or chapter into a few main branches. The map works because it forces you to state how ideas relate, not just list them.

  • Put the main idea in the center and keep branch labels to a few words.
  • Link branches with arrows that name the relationship, such as causes or is part of.
  • Check every node against your source so the map reflects your course, not guesses.
  • Redraw the map from memory after a day or two to see what you still remember.
Example mind map branches for the human heart
ChambersAtria receive blood · Ventricles pump blood out · Septum divides left and right sides
ValvesTricuspid and mitral control inflow · Pulmonary and aortic control outflow · Valves prevent backflow
Circulation pathsPulmonary circuit goes to the lungs · Systemic circuit goes to the body · Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood stay separate
Cardiac cycleDiastole is filling · Systole is contraction · Heart sounds come from valves closing
Heart wall layersEpicardium is the outer layer · Myocardium is the muscle · Endocardium is the inner lining

Editable branches

Rename, move, or delete any node so the map matches how your course organizes the material.

Explorable layout

Expand and collapse branches to focus on one section at a time, then zoom out to see how topics connect.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of a page, and the map is drawn from that content.

How it works

Pick one central idea

Write the topic or question in the center of a blank page, such as what the heart does in circulation.

Add main branches and link them

Draw a branch for each major subtopic, then add short labels and arrows that name how two ideas relate.

Test yourself on the links

Cover the map and explain each connection out loud, then fix any link you cannot justify from your notes.

Keep labels short and specific. A branch that says "valves" teaches less than one that says "valves prevent backflow during each beat," and the arrows between branches should describe the relationship in a few words.

If building the map by hand takes too long, DeckOwl can draft one from your own PDF or notes. You can then edit the structure, which is where most of the learning happens.

Frequently asked questions

How many main branches should a concept map for studying have?

Five to seven main branches usually keeps a map readable. If you need more, group related branches under a sub-heading instead.

How do I check that my concept map is accurate?

Compare each branch and link against your lecture notes or textbook. Then cover the map and explain each connection aloud to find gaps.

Is the AI mind map generator free?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exporting your map is a paid feature on the Plus and Pro plans.

Can I use photos of my notes instead of typed text?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can upload a picture of handwritten or printed notes.
