Why draw a mind map by hand

Sketching a hand drawn mind map forces you to decide which ideas hang off which, and that decision is much of the learning. Many students find that rewriting a topic in their own layout makes it easier to recall later.

  • Start with the central topic in the middle of the page and keep it short.
  • Draw 4 to 7 main branches, one for each major theme in your notes.
  • Add 2 to 4 sub-points per branch, using words rather than full sentences.
  • Redraw the map from memory once a day to check what you have retained.

Light-dependent reactionsOccur in thylakoid membranes · Produce ATP and NADPH · Split water and release oxygen
Mitosis: prophaseChromosomes condense · Nuclear envelope breaks down · Spindle fibers form
Krebs cycleTakes place in the mitochondrial matrix · Produces NADH and FADH2 · Releases CO2
Loop of HenleDescending limb is permeable to water · Ascending limb pumps out salts · Helps concentrate urine

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, notes, or a photo of your pages.

Review the branches

Check the main themes and sub-points, then edit anything that looks off.

Draw it by hand

Sketch the map on paper using the branches, or keep it on screen to explore.

A printable or ready-made map only shows someone else's structure. Generating one from your own lecture slides or textbook chapter gives you branches that match what your class actually covers, so you can redraw it without guessing at the layout.

The free plan lets you generate and study maps in the browser. Plus adds unlimited generations and PDF export, so you can print a clean copy to sketch over.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a hand drawn mind map for studying?

Write the central topic in the middle of the page, then draw main branches for the major themes. Add short sub-points to each branch, and redraw the map from memory later to test yourself.

How many branches should a mind map have?

Most learners find 4 to 7 main branches manageable for one topic. If a branch grows past four or five sub-points, split it into its own map.

Can I export the mind map to print or share?

PDF export is included in the Plus plan, which also covers DOCX and Anki export. The free plan lets you study maps in the browser without exports.

Is DeckOwl free to try?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month, and you do not need a credit card to start.
