How the quiz generator works

Most quizzes feel flat because the questions have nothing to do with what your class covered. A fun quiz works better when it is built from the slides, PDF or notes you studied, so every question points back to something you actually need to remember.

  • Pick the question type that fits the lesson, from multiple-choice to short answer
  • Read the explanation after each answer to see why it was right or wrong
  • Retake only the questions you missed to keep review short
  • Students with a school email get 40% off Plus or Pro
Example high school biology quiz questions
Which organelle produces most of a cell's ATP?The mitochondrion. It carries out most of cellular respiration, and its oxidative phosphorylation step makes the bulk of the cell's ATP.
True or false: the primary cell wall of plant cells is made mostly of cellulose.True. Cellulose fibers form the main structure of the plant cell wall, giving cells rigidity.
What simple sugar do plants store as the main product of photosynthesis?Glucose. Plants convert light energy into glucose, which cells later break down during respiration to release energy.
What happens to enzyme activity when temperature rises far above its optimum?Activity drops sharply. High heat denatures the enzyme's protein shape, so the active site no longer fits its substrate.
Which part of a phospholipid in the cell membrane is hydrophilic? The phosphate head. It is polar and faces the watery fluid inside and outside the cell, while the fatty acid tails face inward.

Quizzes from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain text notes, or photos of pages. Every question comes from what you actually studied.

Three question types

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions. Each one comes with an explanation so wrong answers teach you something.

Export when you need it

Study in the browser for free. PDF and DOCX export are included in Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are available on Pro.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a page. Text recognition reads images too.

Pick a question type

Select multiple-choice, true/false or short answer, then generate the quiz.

Play and review

Answer the questions, read the explanations and retake the parts you missed.

DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain text and photos of pages, then writes multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions with an explanation for each answer. The free plan lets you study the quiz in the browser with 3 generations per month.

Exporting is a paid feature. Plus at $99.90/year or $9.99/month adds unlimited generations and PDF and DOCX export, and Pro at $14.99/month adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for learning management systems.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a quiz fun without making it too easy?

Mix question types so you cannot guess the pattern, and include a few short answer questions that require you to explain the idea in your own words. Keep the quiz short enough that you finish it in one sitting.

How often should I quiz myself on the same material?

Quiz yourself once soon after the lesson, then again a few days later, and again before the test. Spacing out the repeats usually helps more than one long session.

Can I export a quiz to Moodle?

Moodle XML export is available on the Pro plan at $14.99/month, alongside QTI 2.1 export. PDF and DOCX export are included in Plus.

Is there a free plan, and do I need a credit card?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, with no exports. You do not need a credit card to start.
