What a Canvas quiz can and cannot access

Most students asking about this want to know whether Canvas quizzes can see your camera before a test. Standard Canvas quizzes do not turn on your webcam by themselves. Camera access usually comes from a third-party proctoring tool that your instructor has connected to a specific quiz, and that tool asks for permission before it records anything.

  • Standard Canvas quizzes do not record video on their own.
  • Proctoring tools are added per quiz by the instructor, not by default.
  • If a quiz asks for camera permission you did not expect, ask your instructor before you allow it.
  • DeckOwl does not access your camera or take part in any Canvas quiz.
Example Canvas quiz practice questions about proctoring
Does a standard Canvas quiz turn on your webcam by default? No. Camera access comes only from a proctoring tool that the instructor has connected to that quiz.
What usually requests webcam access during a proctored Canvas quiz?A third-party proctoring tool that the instructor enabled for that quiz. It asks for permission before it records.
Can an instructor view a camera feed if no proctoring tool is attached to the quiz? No. Without a proctoring tool there is no camera feed, so the quiz runs in the browser like any other page.
Why should you check quiz settings before an exam?Proctoring is set per quiz, so one course can have a camera-free quiz and a monitored one.
What should you do if a quiz asks for camera access you did not expect?Stop and ask your instructor which tool is requesting access and whether another option exists, since the request means proctoring is active.

Pick the question types

Choose multiple choice, true/false or open questions to match how your course tests you.

Practice and review

Answer the questions, read the explanations, and go back to the ones you missed.

Because the setting belongs to each quiz, two quizzes in the same course can differ. Read the quiz instructions and syllabus, and ask your instructor if a camera or required browser is mentioned. Whatever the setup, study early with practice questions so exam day is about the material, not the software.
