Check Canvas quiz grades question by question and reteach the misses
Canvas shows the total score by default. Per-question patterns tell you what to reteach, and DeckOwl can build a practice quiz from the same material.
Reading grades by question in Canvas
Per-question results are where most instructors find out why a class struggled, and in Canvas the way to read Canvas quiz grades by question is through two views. Quiz Statistics shows how often each item was answered correctly across the class, while SpeedGrader shows each student's response one item at a time. The main gradebook usually reports only the total, so these views are where the pattern appears.
- Quiz Statistics for item analysis across all submissions
- SpeedGrader for reviewing each student's answer to one question
- Checking whether an edited question should apply to everyone before changing points
- Practice questions with explanations drawn from your own material
Per-question patterns
Spot the items most students missed so you can tell whether the concept or the question wording needs attention.
Practice quizzes with explanations
Generate multiple-choice, true/false or open questions from your PDFs, slides or notes, each with an explanation.
Exports on paid plans
Download PDF or DOCX on Plus, and QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML on Pro, once you have reviewed the questions.
How it works
Open the quiz results in Canvas
Use Quiz Statistics for item analysis across the class, or SpeedGrader to read individual answers one question at a time.
Note the weakest questions
Look for items with low percent correct and compare the wording and answer choices against what you taught.
Generate a follow-up quiz
Upload the lesson material to DeckOwl and review the generated questions and explanations before using them.
Once you know which items were missed, the fix is usually reteaching a concept or repairing the question itself. DeckOwl covers the second part of that workflow: paste your slides or notes and it generates questions with explanations you can review before a class or a follow-up quiz. It does not connect to Canvas or grade submissions.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I see grades by question in a Canvas quiz?
Open the quiz in Canvas and use Quiz Statistics for item analysis across the whole class. SpeedGrader shows each student's answer to each question, while the main gradebook usually shows only the total score.
What does a low percent correct on one question tell me?
It often means the question was hard, ambiguous, or taught poorly. Check the wording and answer choices first, then reteach the concept if most of the class missed it.
Can DeckOwl grade my Canvas quiz?
No. DeckOwl generates practice quizzes with explanations from your PDFs, slides or notes, and it does not grade or connect to Canvas. The free plan lets you study in the browser, while exporting files requires a paid plan.
Can I import a DeckOwl quiz into Canvas?
Pro includes QTI 2.1 export, which you can try importing into your learning management system. Test with a small quiz first, since import support depends on your institution's setup.
