What a question stem does in a quiz
A question stem is the lead-in text that poses the problem, and it is the first thing a student reads on any item. Good Canvas quiz question stems name the task, include the data needed to solve it, and stop before the answer choices begin.
- Ask one question per stem, and make the task explicit.
- Include the values, units or context needed to reason to the answer.
- Avoid negatives such as NOT or EXCEPT unless they are essential, and then emphasize them.
- Do not repeat wording from the correct answer, since students can match it without knowing the material.
Stems that state the problem
Each generated question gives a complete lead-in that tells the student exactly what to answer before they see the options.
Multiple-choice, true/false and open
Pick the question format that fits your material, and get explanations that show why the correct answer is right.
Built from your own material
Questions are drawn from the PDFs, slides, DOCX files, notes or photos of pages you upload, so the stems match your course.
How it works
Upload your material
Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.
Choose the question type
Select multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, then generate a set with stems and explanations.
Review and export
Edit any stem that needs tightening. Paid plans export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.
Weak stems tend to fail in predictable ways: they are vague, they hint at the answer, or they use negatives that students misread under time pressure. Reviewing each stem for one clear question, complete context and no clues is the fastest way to improve a quiz before you publish it.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a question stem be?
Keep it as short as possible while still giving the problem, the needed data and one clear question. A longer stem is fine in STEM items when the student has to read a scenario or use values from a table.
Should a question stem repeat words from the answer choices?
Avoid it. When the stem and the correct option share distinctive wording, students can pick the right answer by matching text instead of reasoning through the content.
