How to practice for a written driving test

Most people looking for driving test questions and answers want to check what they know before exam day, and the most useful practice comes from the rules their own state or course actually teaches. Ready-made question banks can be out of date or cover a different region, so a set built from your own handbook is a better match for what will appear on the test.

  • Practice the rules you are least sure about first, rather than rereading what you already know.
  • Read the explanation after every answer, including the ones you got right.
  • Say the rule out loud in your own words before checking the answer.
  • Come back to missed questions after a day or two instead of cramming them the night before.
Example driving test questions and answers
What should you do when you approach a yellow traffic light?Stop if you can do so safely. Yellow means the light is about to turn red, so you should only go through if stopping would be unsafe.
May you pass a school bus that has its stop arm extended and red lights flashing on an undivided road? No. Traffic in both directions must stop until the bus loads or unloads and the signals are turned off, because children may be crossing the road.
What following distance is commonly taught for normal driving conditions?Keep at least a three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead. Increase the gap in rain, at night or on slippery roads, since stopping takes longer.
What does a solid yellow line on your side of the center line mean? You may not pass other vehicles from your lane. The solid line marks a no-passing zone for traffic traveling in your direction.
When should you turn on your headlights?Turn them on at night and whenever visibility is reduced, such as in fog, heavy rain or dusk, so other drivers can see you.

Questions from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page. The questions come from the rules in your handbook, not a generic list.

Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer

Mix formats so you practice recognizing the right rule and explaining it in your own words.

Explanations for every answer

Each question shows why the correct answer is right, so a wrong guess becomes something you learn from.

How it works

Upload your study material

Add the handbook chapter, course notes or slides you plan to be tested on.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer and generate a set from your material.

Practice and review the misses

Work through the quiz in your browser, then revisit the questions you missed until they feel automatic.

Start with the sections you find hardest, such as right-of-way, speed limits, signs and following distance. Answer without looking at the explanation first, then read why each correct answer is right. Repeat the questions you missed the next day, because spacing out review is what makes the rules stick.

Frequently asked questions

How should I study for a written driving test?

Start with the handbook sections your test covers, such as signs, right-of-way and speed rules. Practice questions you answer without help, then review the explanations for any you missed.

Which driving rules are most often tested?

Right-of-way at intersections, traffic signals and signs, speed limits, following distance and no-passing zones appear often on written tests. Check your own handbook, since the exact topics depend on your state or country.

Can I export my driving practice questions?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. PDF and DOCX export are included in the Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are included in Pro.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, and you do not need a credit card to start.
