What this tool does and does not do

Your geography unit probably lives in slide decks or chapter notes, so a drag and drop geography quiz is hard to find ready-made in that exact format. DeckOwl takes your own material and writes questions from it instead.

  • Multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer geography questions
  • Explanations that show why the right answer is right
  • Quizzes built from your own PDFs, slides and notes
  • A free plan with 3 generations a month and no credit card
Example geography quiz questions
Which river forms much of the border between the United States and Mexico? The Rio Grande. It marks the boundary along much of Texas and the border states.
True or false: The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world.True. Antarctica is larger overall, but it is a cold desert, so the Sahara is the largest hot one.
Which country is the largest by land area?Russia. It spans eleven time zones, which is why its land area is so large.
Which strait separates Spain from Morocco and links the Atlantic to the Mediterranean? The Strait of Gibraltar. It is less than 15 km wide at its narrowest point.
What is the capital of Australia?Canberra. It was chosen as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, which were rivals for the role.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slide deck or photo of a textbook page.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer for your quiz.

Study in the browser

Answer in the browser on the free plan, then export a file when you need one.

DeckOwl does not include drag-and-drop map labeling, so it will not place country names on a blank outline for you. What it does well is turn the place names, dates and causes in your lecture slides into questions you answer from memory.

Exports to PDF or DOCX let you print a quiz for class review, and the free plan needs no credit card to start.

Frequently asked questions

How do I study capitals and river names effectively?

Spaced repetition works well for place names: review the ones you miss more often and space out the rest. Saying the answer aloud before you check it also strengthens recall.

How many questions should a geography quiz have for one unit?

Ten to twenty questions covers most single-chapter units without becoming tedious. Mix simple recall with a few questions that ask why a place matters.

Can I label a blank map by dragging names onto it?

No. DeckOwl creates multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions, not drag-and-drop map labeling. You can paste your own list of place names into your notes and generate a quiz from them.

Do I have to pay to export a quiz?

Yes. The free plan lets you study in the browser, PDF and DOCX export come with Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export come with Pro.
