What makes a history question worth asking

Most history quizzes test isolated dates, but good history quiz questions ask why events happened, what changed afterward, or how two sources disagree about the same event.

  • Ask why and what changed questions, not only when and who questions.
  • Make sure each wrong option reflects a real misconception from the reading.
  • Check that the question can be answered from your own notes or assigned text.
  • Retake missed questions after a few days to move them into long-term memory.
Example good history quiz questions
Why did the Treaty of Versailles include the war guilt clause (Article 231)?It assigned Germany responsibility for causing the war, which justified reparations, and German resentment of the clause later fueled political grievances.
Which 1215 document forced an English king to accept that law bound the crown?Magna Carta. It established that the king's power was limited by law, a principle later cited in due process arguments.
True or false: The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 to stop East Germans from emigrating to West Berlin.True. Many East Germans had been fleeing through Berlin, so the wall sealed off that route.
Why did Japan's Meiji government convert samurai stipends into bonds in the 1870s?It reduced the state's fiscal burden and weakened the samurai class's privileged position, which helped the government build a conscript army.
What was the main goal of the Marshall Plan?To provide US economic aid for rebuilding Western European economies after World War II, which was meant to limit the spread of communism.

Questions from your readings

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a textbook page and get questions built from that material.

Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer

Mix formats so you practice recognizing facts and explaining causes in your own words.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation, so a wrong answer teaches you why the right one is correct.

How it works

Upload your history material

Add lecture notes, a chapter PDF or slides. Plain text works too.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer, or mix them in one quiz.

Answer and review

Take the quiz in your browser and read the explanations for anything you missed.

A useful test question has one clearly correct answer, distractors that a student who skipped the reading might pick, and a link to a specific passage or lecture point. When you write these by hand, it is easy to drift toward trivia. Generating questions from your own material keeps them tied to what your course actually emphasized.

Review the questions you miss, not just your score. The explanation usually points to the cause or context you need to add to your notes.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a history quiz question good for studying?

A good history question tests cause, consequence, or significance rather than a single date or name. It should have one clearly correct answer and plausible alternatives that reflect real confusion about the topic.

How do I write history questions that test understanding instead of memorization?

Ask how or why something happened, compare two events or perspectives, or apply a principle to a new case. Then check that you can answer in your own words without looking at your notes.

Can I export the generated questions?

Yes, on paid plans. Plus includes PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for learning management systems.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports. No credit card is needed to start.
