Add answer keys to a Google Form quiz in a few clicks
Google Forms scores a quiz only after each question has an answer key. Here is how to set one, and how DeckOwl can write the questions and explanations from your own material.
Why answer keys are the hard part
Most people get stuck at the answer key step, not at writing the questions. Once a quiz is in how to add answers to a Google Form quiz mode, every question needs a correct response before scoring works, and that setup takes longer than the questions themselves.
- Turn on Make this a quiz before setting any answer keys.
- Use checkboxes instead of radio buttons when a question has more than one correct option.
- Add every accepted wording for short answer questions, since matches are based on what you list.
- Write feedback for wrong answers so respondents know what to review.
Answer keys for every question type
Multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions each need a correct response set in the answer key before Forms can score them.
Explanations you can reuse
DeckOwl writes a one-sentence explanation for each question, so you can paste feedback into the answer key rather than writing it from scratch.
Questions from your own material
Upload a PDF, slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions that match the content you are teaching or studying.
How it works
Turn on quiz mode
In the form's Settings, open the Quizzes tab and switch on Make this a quiz. Answer keys and point values appear only after this is enabled.
Set the answer key
Open each question, click Answer key, then select the correct option. For short answer questions, add each accepted wording.
Add points and feedback
Enter the points for each question and add feedback for correct and incorrect responses. Then choose when respondents can see their scores.
DeckOwl can draft the questions, correct options and short explanations from a PDF, slides or notes, so you spend your time checking the content rather than typing each answer key by hand. You still review every item before you publish it.
Quiz exports are a paid feature. The free plan lets you generate three times per month and study in the browser, while the Plus plan adds unlimited generations and PDF or DOCX export.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add an answer key in a Google Form quiz?
Open the question, click Answer key at the bottom of the card, and select the correct option. For short answer questions, type each accepted response and set the points for the question.
Can a Google Form quiz have more than one correct answer?
Yes, if you use checkboxes, you can tick several options in the answer key. Radio buttons only accept one correct option.
How many quiz questions should I write for a study session?
Most students find ten to twenty questions manageable for a single session, and it helps to cover one topic at a time. Shorter sets are easier to review when you check the explanations afterward.
Does DeckOwl export quizzes to Google Forms?
DeckOwl exports quizzes as PDF and DOCX on the Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML on the Pro plan. Exports are paid features, and the free plan lets you study in the browser.
