How a Google Forms branching quiz works

A Google Forms branching quiz sends each respondent to a different section based on how they answered, so a wrong answer can lead to a review section while a right one moves on. The setup is short but easy to get wrong: branching only works from multiple choice and dropdown questions, and every destination has to be a section.

  • Add section breaks before you set any branch, since each destination must be a section.
  • Use multiple choice or dropdown questions for routing, because checkboxes and short answer cannot branch.
  • Give each review section a short explanation so respondents know why they were routed there.
  • Test the form in preview mode with at least one path per answer option before you share the link.
Example Google Forms branching quiz questions
Which Google Forms question types can send respondents to a different section?Only multiple choice and dropdown questions can branch. Checkboxes and short answer questions cannot, so use a multiple choice question for routing.
What must exist before you can set a branch destination?Section breaks, added with the Add section button. Each destination is a section, so the form has to be split into sections first.
Where do you set the routing for each answer option in Google Forms? In the three-dot menu at the bottom of the question card, under Go to section based on answer. That menu controls where each option leads.
How do you end the form early for a respondent who picks a disqualifying option?Choose Submit form as that option's destination. The form closes for that respondent without showing the remaining sections.
Why should you preview a branched Google Forms quiz before sharing it?Preview it with the eye icon and answer each path to confirm every section is reachable. A section with no route into it will never be seen by respondents.

How it works

Write the questions

Upload your material and generate multiple-choice questions with explanations, then copy the ones you want into a new Google Form.

Add sections and routing

Click Add section to create each destination, then set Go to section based on answer on each multiple choice or dropdown question.

Preview every path

Use the preview icon and answer as different respondents to confirm every section is reachable and every route ends correctly.

DeckOwl does not build the form for you, but it can write the questions it will route. Upload your lecture slides, PDF or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations, then sort them into review and advance sections. Exports to PDF or DOCX need the Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML export needs Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Which question types can I use for branching in Google Forms?

Only multiple choice and dropdown questions can send respondents to a different section. Checkboxes and short answer questions always continue to the next section.

How many questions should a branching quiz have for a study topic?

A branching quiz works well with 5 to 10 routing questions, each covering one concept from your notes. Fewer questions keep the paths easy to test, and more can make the review sections hard to follow.

Can DeckOwl export my quiz directly to Google Forms?

No, DeckOwl does not export to Google Forms, so you copy the generated questions into your form. PDF and DOCX export are on the Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML are on Pro.

Is there a free way to try generating quiz questions first?

Yes, the free plan includes 5 generations a week and studying in the browser. No credit card is needed to start.
