How the grammar quiz maker works

Most grammar review starts with a chapter of notes or a slide deck, so a grammar quiz maker that reads your own material saves you from writing questions from scratch. DeckOwl reads PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text and photos of pages, then drafts multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions based on the rules it finds.

  • Multiple-choice items on agreement, verb tense and pronoun case
  • True/false statements that target common errors
  • Short-answer prompts that ask you to rewrite a sentence correctly
  • An explanation on every question showing why the answer is right
Example grammar quiz questions with answers
Choose the correct verb: "Neither the students nor the teacher ___ ready." (a) is (b) are(a) is. With neither...nor, the verb agrees with the nearer subject, here the singular "teacher."
True or false: "Between you and I" is correct in formal writing.False. After a preposition such as "between," use the object pronoun: "between you and me."
Is "Because the bell rang" a complete sentence? Answer yes or no.No. It begins with a subordinating conjunction, so it is a dependent clause and needs a main clause to complete the sentence.
Fill in: "She had ___ finished the report before the meeting began." (a) already (b) yet(a) already. The past perfect with "already" shows an action completed before another past moment.
Is "data" singular or plural in formal academic writing?Traditionally plural, as in "The data show a trend," because it is the plural of "datum." Many style guides now accept singular use for the mass noun, so check your course's style guide.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or a photo of a page. The quiz is built from the grammar rules in your notes, not a generic question bank.

Three question types

Get multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions. Mix them to check recognition and recall in the same quiz.

Explanations on every answer

Each question includes a short explanation, so a wrong answer shows the rule behind the correct one.

How it works

Upload your notes or slides

Add a PDF, Word file, PowerPoint deck, text file or a photo of a page from your grammar textbook.

Choose question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false, short answer or a mix, then generate the quiz.

Practice and review

Work through the quiz in your browser, read the explanations, and retake the questions that were wrong.

Each question comes with an explanation, so a wrong answer teaches the rule instead of just marking it wrong. The free plan includes 3 generations a month and browser study. Plus, at $39 a year or $7.99 a month, removes the limit and adds PDF and DOCX export.

Frequently asked questions

Which grammar topics make the best quiz questions?

Rules with clear right answers work best, such as subject-verb agreement, verb tense, pronoun case and comma placement. Notes that state the rule and show an example give the generator enough detail to test that same rule.

How many questions should a grammar quiz have?

Ten to fifteen questions cover one lesson well. Mixing multiple-choice with a few short-answer rewrites tests recall better than recognition alone, and retaking the quiz a day or two later shows what stuck.

Can I export a grammar quiz to Moodle?

Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 export are included on the Pro plan at $14.99 a month. PDF and DOCX export are on Plus, which costs $39 a year or $7.99 a month.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. The free plan gives you 3 generations a month and browser study with no card required. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
