How many questions a pub quiz needs

A pub quiz usually runs in rounds, and the right total depends on how long the night should last, how many teams are playing and how long each answer takes to write down. Ask yourself how many questions should a pub quiz have before you write a single one, because too few rounds feel thin while too many leave teams restless.

  • Count rounds first, then questions per round.
  • Leave time for scoring and answer checks between rounds.
  • Mix difficulty so every team has a chance to score.
  • Keep a spare question or two for ties and disputes.

What chemical symbol does sodium use?Na. The symbol comes from its Latin name, natrium.
True or false: Mount Everest is the tallest mountain measured from sea level.True. Its summit is the highest point above sea level, while Mauna Kea is taller when measured from its base on the ocean floor.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, DOCX, plain text or a photo of a page.

Choose the question type

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions for each round.

Generate and edit

Review the questions and explanations, then run the quiz or export it.

A practical approach is to fix the number of rounds first, give each round a theme, and then set the question count so the whole evening fits the time you have. Shorter rounds keep attention high, and mixing easy and hard questions keeps every team competing.

Once you know the total, writing the questions is the slow part. DeckOwl can read your own notes and produce a set you can edit, then export when you are on a paid plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long should each round of a pub quiz last?

Plan each round so the slowest team can finish comfortably, and leave a few minutes between rounds for scoring. Short rounds help keep the room engaged.

What mix of question types works for general knowledge trivia?

Blend quick factual questions with a few word-based or picture-based ones and some true/false items for variety. Keep the hardest questions to a small share so most teams can score.

Can DeckOwl make pub quiz questions from my own notes?

Yes. Upload a PDF, slides, DOCX, plain text or a photo of a page, and DeckOwl generates multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations you can edit.

Which exports are included in each plan?

The free plan gives three generations per month with no exports. Plus adds unlimited generations with PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export.
