Turn your class notes into quiz questions for a Gimkit game
Gimkit generates the game code when you host a session. DeckOwl handles the part before that: it reads your PDFs, slides or notes and writes multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions with explanations.
Where the Gimkit code comes from
Gimkit creates the join code for a game when you host a session, so DeckOwl cannot make that code for you. What you can do is prepare the quiz content ahead of time. If you are trying to learn how to make a Gimkit code for a lesson, the code is the last step; the questions are where most of the work is.
- Gimkit generates the join code when you host; DeckOwl does not create it.
- Upload the handout, slides or notes your class already uses instead of starting from scratch.
- Edit generated questions in your own words so they match your course.
- Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the paid Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML are on Pro.
Reads your own material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a page. Images are read with text recognition, so handwritten-style scans of printed notes work too.
Questions with explanations
Each question comes with an answer and an explanation, so you can check what the question is testing before you put it in front of a class.
Study in the browser
The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study with flashcards, quizzes and mind maps. Exports are available on paid plans.
How it works
Upload your notes or slides
Add the file or photo that covers the topic you are teaching, such as a code lab handout or a chapter on programming basics.
Review the generated questions
Remove anything off-topic, edit wording that does not match your class, and keep the questions that test the skill you want to check.
Host the game in Gimkit
Copy the questions into your Gimkit game, then start a session there. Gimkit creates the join code for students when you host.
Start with the material your students already have. A set of code examples, a lab handout or a slide deck about functions and loops is enough for DeckOwl to produce multiple-choice and short answer questions that test the same ideas, each with an explanation you can show after a student answers.
Review the output before you host. Check that each question has one defensible answer, that the wording matches the language your class uses, and that the explanations would help a student who got it wrong.

Frequently asked questions
Does DeckOwl create the Gimkit join code?
No. Gimkit generates the code when you host a game there. DeckOwl helps you write the quiz questions you would use in that game.
What is the best way to study code concepts like loops and variables?
Predict the output of short snippets before you run them, then trace the values line by line on paper. Explaining why each line does what it does is a strong check on whether you understand it.
How many practice questions should I write for a programming unit?
Enough to cover each concept in the unit at least once, with extra questions for the ideas students usually confuse. Short answer questions that ask for the output of a snippet test understanding better than recall alone.
Which export formats need a paid plan?
PDF and DOCX exports, along with Anki and CSV, are included in Plus. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML exports are available on Pro. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exporting.
