What makes a good pub quiz question

Good pub quiz questions have one clear answer, a difficulty the room can reach, and a source you can point to if someone challenges the result. Most weak questions fail on wording: they allow two defensible answers or hide the answer in the question itself.

  • Ask one thing per question and avoid double negatives.
  • Check every answer against a source before the night.
  • Mix difficulty so each round has a few easy openers.
  • Write a one-sentence explanation for each answer to settle disputes.
Example general knowledge trivia questions
Which element has the chemical symbol Fe?Iron. The symbol comes from its Latin name, ferrum, not its English one.
True or false: bananas are botanically classified as berries.True. A botanical berry has one ovary and seeds embedded in fleshy tissue, which describes bananas.
Which country has the most time zones?France, once its overseas territories are counted. Those territories spread its time zones across the globe.
Who painted The Starry Night?Vincent van Gogh, in 1889, while he was staying at an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
What is the hardest natural substance on the Mohs scale?Diamond, rated 10 on the scale. It is the top reference point, so it scratches every other mineral.

Questions from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages, and get questions drawn only from what you provided.

Three question types

Choose multiple choice, true/false or short answer, with a short explanation for each so the host can settle disputes fast.

Study it before you host

Practice the questions in the browser on the free plan, then export to PDF or DOCX on Plus for printed answer sheets.

How it works

Gather a source

Pick a book chapter, a set of articles, or your own fact sheet on the round's theme, such as history, film or geography.

Generate and edit

Choose the question type and count, then remove anything ambiguous or too obscure for your crowd.

Host the round

Print the PDF or DOCX version, or run the questions yourself, and keep the explanations ready for the answer check.

Start from facts you can verify. Write the question first, then the answer, then check whether a reasonable player could give a different correct response. Mixing easy and hard items in each round keeps teams engaged, and true/false items work well as quick warm-ups between harder rounds.

Frequently asked questions

How hard should pub quiz questions be?

Aim for questions that about half the room can answer, with a few easy openers and one or two harder finishers. Test a draft round on a friend to see where people get stuck.

How many questions should a pub quiz round have?

Most hosts use rounds of 8 to 12 questions so teams stay focused and the round finishes in about 15 to 20 minutes. Adjust the count to fit your session length.

Can I export the questions I generate?

Free accounts can study in the browser without exports. Plus includes PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export.

Can I use photos of pages instead of files?

Yes, photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can work from a printed book or handout. Check the extracted text before generating, since blurry photos can produce errors.
