Making a math quiz from your own course material

Most math practice questions already exist in your course, in a lecture slide deck or a problem set PDF. DeckOwl reads those files and writes a ProProfs-style math quiz from them, with multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions that each include an explanation.

  • Use one chapter or unit per quiz so each set of results points to a specific skill.
  • Read the explanation after every answer, including the ones you got right.
  • Retake missed questions after a day or two to see what you retained.
  • Mix multiple choice with short answer questions, since short answer shows whether you can produce the steps yourself.
Example algebra and geometry math quiz questions
Solve for x: 2x + 5 = 17x = 6. Subtract 5 from both sides first, then divide both sides by 2.
True or false: the derivative of sin(x) is cos(x).True. The derivative of sine is cosine, which is a standard result from calculus.
What is the area of a triangle with a base of 10 and a height of 6?30 square units. Area is one half times base times height, so 1/2 × 10 × 6 = 30.
Simplify 3/4 + 2/3.17/12. Rewrite both fractions with denominator 12 as 9/12 + 8/12, then add the numerators.
True or false: a prime number has exactly two distinct positive divisors.True. A prime number is divisible only by 1 and itself, which are its two distinct positive divisors.

Three question types

Multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions, mixed from the same material so practice covers more than one format.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a short explanation of why the correct answer is right, so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.

Built from your own material

Quizzes come from your PDFs, DOCX files, PPTX slides or typed notes, so the questions match what your class actually covers.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX file, plain text notes or a photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Choose the question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false, short answer or a mix, then generate the quiz.

Take the quiz and review

Work through the questions in the browser, read the explanations, and retake the ones you missed.

A useful quiz tests one skill at a time. Start with a single chapter or unit, then check whether the questions cover the formulas, the steps and the common mistakes your instructor flagged. Read every explanation, including for the questions you got right, because the reasoning is often the part that carries over to the next test.

If you teach or tutor, exports make the quiz reusable. The Plus plan adds PDF and DOCX export, and the Pro plan adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for learning management systems. The free plan lets you study in the browser with three generations per month.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a math quiz have for a unit review?

Eight to twelve questions is enough to test one unit without taking too long. Longer quizzes work better once you are reviewing several units at once.

What math topics work best with short answer questions?

Algebra steps, solving equations, geometry formulas and word problems work well because the answer requires showing a result. Multiple choice is better for definitions and recognizing common errors.

Can I export the quiz to a file?

Yes, on paid plans. Plus includes PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes three generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports. No credit card is needed to start.
