How a math variations quiz helps you study

Variations problems, such as choosing an ordered podium or counting passcodes, trip up many students because the rule for repetition changes the formula. A math variations quiz built from your own lecture notes lets you practice exactly the cases your course covers.

  • Practice ordered selections with and without repetition
  • Check your answers against explanations written from your notes
  • Spot whether a problem asks for variations or combinations
  • Repeat missed questions in the browser on the free plan
Example math variations quiz questions
How many ordered 3-letter codes can you make from 5 letters with no repeats?60. Using 5!/(5-3)! = 5 x 4 x 3 = 60, because order matters and each letter can be used only once.
How many ordered 4-digit codes can you make from the digits 0 to 9 if repeats are allowed?10,000. Each of the 4 positions has 10 choices, so 10^4 = 10,000 arrangements.
True or false: the number of variations of 6 items taken 2 at a time without repetition is 15.False. The count is 6 x 5 = 30, and 15 is the number of combinations, which ignore order.
What is the number of variations of 7 items taken 3 at a time without repetition?210. Multiplying 7 x 6 x 5 = 210 counts the ordered choices for each of the three positions.
In a race with 8 runners, how many ways can gold, silver and bronze be awarded?336. Each medal goes to a different runner and order matters, so 8 x 7 x 6 = 336.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain-text notes or a photo of a page, and the quiz is built only from that content.

Three question types

Get multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions, so you can test both formulas and reasoning about repetition.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes an explanation, so a wrong answer shows you which step to check, such as whether order matters.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slide deck, document or plain-text notes on permutations, variations or counting.

Choose the question type

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions and generate the quiz.

Practice and review

Answer in the browser, read the explanations and repeat the questions you missed.

Good practice mixes both cases, with and without repetition, so you learn to read the wording before picking a formula. Each question comes with an explanation, so a wrong answer points you to the step to recheck.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between variations and combinations?

Variations count ordered selections of k items from n, so the order of the chosen items matters. Combinations count unordered selections, so choosing A then B is the same as choosing B then A.

How do I count variations without repetition?

Use the formula n!/(n-k)!, which equals n x (n-1) x ... over k factors. For example, choosing 3 people from 8 in ranked order gives 8 x 7 x 6 = 336.

Can I export the quiz to QTI or Moodle XML?

Yes, QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are included in the Pro plan. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Is there a free plan to try it?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports are available on paid plans.
