How long the MCAT is and how to practice at that length

Your MCAT practice test length should mirror the real exam, which has four scored sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations (95 minutes), Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (90 minutes), Biological and Biochemical Foundations (95 minutes), and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations (95 minutes). With breaks, the full sitting runs about 7.5 hours, so stamina matters as much as content.

  • Science sections have 59 questions each, and CARS has 53.
  • Budget roughly 1.6 to 1.7 minutes per question during timed practice.
  • Track your pace per section, not just your total score.
  • Re-time your weakest section once a week until it fits the clock.
MCAT section length practice questions
How many minutes are allotted to the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section?90 minutes. It is the only section timed at 90 minutes instead of 95, so it is the shortest block.
How many questions are on each science section of the MCAT?59 questions each in 95 minutes, so the average pace is about 1.6 minutes per question.
How many scored questions are on the full MCAT?230 questions across four sections: 59 in each science section and 53 in CARS.
About how much actual testing time does the MCAT include, not counting breaks?About 6 hours 15 minutes across four sections, with breaks bringing the full sitting to about 7.5 hours.
Why should you take full-length MCAT practice late in your preparation?Long sittings build the stamina needed for roughly 6 hours of testing, which short quizzes cannot train on their own.

Quizzes from your own notes

Upload PDFs, slides, DOCX files, plain notes, or photos of pages, and get multiple-choice, true/false, or short-answer questions.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with an explanation, so a missed item becomes a short review rather than a dead end.

Exports on paid plans

Plus exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV. Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for course platforms.

How it works

Upload your review material

Add the chapters, lecture slides, or notes for the sections you are practicing.

Choose question type and count

Pick multiple-choice, true/false, or short-answer and set how many questions a set should contain.

Time yourself and review

Work through the set under a timer, then read the explanations for every question you missed.

Short quizzes build recall, but they cannot train endurance on their own. Plan a few longer sessions in the weeks before test day, and use shorter sets on other days to target weak topics from your notes.

DeckOwl does not replicate the official exam, but it lets you set the number of questions and the topics. Dividing each section's time by its question count gives your pace: about 1.6 minutes per question for the science sections and about 1.7 for CARS.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the MCAT in total?

The full exam takes about 7.5 hours including breaks, with roughly 6 hours 15 minutes of actual testing across four sections. Check the AAMC site for the current schedule before you plan a practice day.

How should I pace myself during a practice section?

Divide the section's minutes by its question count to get a per-question target, about 1.6 minutes for the science sections and about 1.7 for CARS. Mark questions you cannot answer in time and move on, then return to them if time allows.

Can DeckOwl create a full-length MCAT practice test?

DeckOwl generates quizzes from the material you upload, with the number of questions and topics set by you, and it adds explanations for each answer. It does not reproduce the official exam, so use it alongside full-length practice from official materials.

Is the free plan enough to try it?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports are available on paid plans.
