Build a question bank from the slides you already have

Teachers who build lecture decks often need a question bank by Friday, and an MCQ generator from PPT can draft one from the slides you already have. The tool reads each slide's text, picks out the facts worth testing, and writes a stem, a correct answer and plausible wrong options.

  • Upload a PPT, PDF, DOCX, notes file or a photo of a printed slide.
  • Generate multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions in one pass.
  • Read the explanation for every answer before you add it to a quiz.
  • Export to PDF or DOCX on Plus, or to QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML on Pro.
Example multiple-choice questions on climate and weather
Which layer of the atmosphere contains nearly all weather? The troposphere, because it holds most of the atmosphere's mass and water vapor, where clouds form.
True or false: weather describes short-term conditions, while climate describes long-term averages.True. Climate is usually averaged over 30 years or more, so one cold week does not change it.
Why do coastal cities often have milder temperatures than inland cities at the same latitude?Water heats and cools more slowly than land, so the ocean moderates the temperature of nearby air.
What causes the seasons on Earth?Earth's axial tilt of about 23.5 degrees, which changes how directly sunlight strikes each hemisphere, not its distance from the sun.
What does a low-pressure system typically bring?Rising air that cools and condenses, often producing clouds and precipitation.

Reads PPT and PDF slides

Upload a PowerPoint deck, PDF, DOCX or notes. Photos of printed slides are read with text recognition.

Multiple choice, true/false, short answer

Pick the question type that fits the lecture, and every question comes with an explanation of the correct answer.

Export when you need it

Export to PDF or DOCX on Plus. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are available on Pro.

How it works

Upload your slides

Add a PPT, PDF, DOCX, notes file or a photo of a page.

Choose the question type

Select multiple choice, true/false or short answer, and set how many questions you want.

Review and study

Check the explanations, study in the browser, or export the set for your class.

Good multiple-choice questions test understanding rather than trivia. Review each draft against the slide it came from, remove any distractor that is obviously wrong, and keep the explanations so students learn why the right answer is right.

DeckOwl is free to start with 3 generations per month and browser study. Plus adds unlimited generations and PDF or DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for learning management systems.

Frequently asked questions

How many multiple-choice questions should I write per lecture deck?

A common target is one or two questions per slide that teaches a distinct idea, which gives a 30-slide deck about 30 to 50 questions. Cut any that test the same fact twice.

What makes a good wrong answer in a multiple-choice question?

Good distractors are plausible errors a student might really make, such as a reversed cause and effect or a related term from the same unit. Avoid options that are obviously absurd or that give the answer away by length.

Is there a free plan for MCQ generation?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but exports are not included.

Can I export the questions to Moodle?

Moodle XML export is a Pro plan feature, and QTI 2.1 export is included there too. PDF and DOCX export are available on Plus.
